Resolve Studio v17 doesn't start after fresh Installation

PostSun Apr 04, 2021 11:01 am

Hi all,
after hours of studying the topics on this forum, I have figured out why DaVinci Resolve Studio v17.1 won't start on my freshly installed Windows 10 PC. I have several USB devices connected such as wireless mouse, keyboard, card reader, DaVinci Speed Editor and also a Plantronics DECT USB dongle. When I unplug the Plantronics dongle, Resolve Studio starts and works as expected, but once the dongle is plugged in, I only get the Resolve Studio splash screen and then the application crashes.

Since this is apparently not an isolated case and it seems to always be associated with USB devices that provide an audio interface, I think the issue should be addressed by support more deeply. At least I can't find anything in the product documentation about and also I can't find a fix or even an appropriate workaround. And no, unplugging the headset is not an appropriate workaround at all!

I have a series of ideas that I use to achieve success with NLE's.

One of them is: Don't use USB audio.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Thank you Jim, but that's not quite helpful. There might be people who work in teams and those might need to communicate with colleagues. Now guess there might be regions in the world where classic POTS/ISDN infgrastructures are not state of the art anymore and people are using VoIP with softphones and various meeting platforms on a daily basis. Maybe this sounds kind of science-fiction to you but it's true and real.

I'm not seeing the relationship to USB audio.

Patrick,

Can you provide a Windows NFO file for us to examine when you have said DECT headset plugged in?

If possible, after a failed startup, can you grab Resolve logs too?

The steps for both are described here.

Thanks

Jim, you are forever saying don't use usb audio. The majority of audio interfaces use usb and I have no problem using mine with Resolve.
Headsets with microphones, usb or bluetooth, can cause problems with Resolve. The usb bus can be very sensitive to problems. I've had a computer start to misbehave with all sorts of programmes. Turned out to be an external drive connected via usb. In itself the drive did not display any problems, but once unplugged everything went back to normal. The drive was starting to go bad and in turn was affecting the usb bus.

That's why the recommendation against. Mobo or installed sound cards are better quality/more reliable.

Seems there's no progress anymore.
I've just invalidated the OneDrive link so if you still need the data please let me know.
