DaVinci (16 and 17) crashing often. I need some assistance.

PostTue Apr 13, 2021 3:33 pm

I am in the midst of switching from a Mac Desktop to a PC, and when I try to run Resolve on the new PC, it crashes before I can do much of anything in the software. I also get no error messages, the program just closes after not responding for a moment. I own a studio version of the software, and need some help troubleshooting this, as I have deadlines to meet.

PC Specs:
CPU: i5 6500 3.20GHz
RAM: 32Gb
GPU: Nvidia Titan X 12GB
Boot drive: SSD

I have exported one main project that I am working on, and when I try to run the project, the software crashes when I try to open timelines. I have also tried opening new projects, but the software still crashes.

465.89. I was told 461.09 was evil and to avoid it :)

Yeah, 461 is a problem. I use the 465 myself without issue. May have to look elsewhere.

Working with an absence of data, the only other ideas I have are some very broad ones.

This is a dedicated editing system? Nothing extraneous installed like games, email, office, development, security, etc.

You're working exclusively from internal drives? No removables or networks?

You have no USB devices attached other than wired mouse and keyboard?

There's a .bat file in the install directory for gathering all the logs together - run that. It'll put a zip file of the logs on your desktop. Post that here. Although Resolve rarely displays any useful error messages, it does log everything that goes on under the bonnet so those files will help people diagnose what's causing the crashes.
Resolve Studio 17.1.1
CentOS 7.3
Asus Z87, Intel Core i7-4770 3.4GHz, 24 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 (450.66, supports CUDA 11.0). Old system but runs Resolve remarkably well!

Thanks.

Actually, I can't find how to run the .bat file...

My kids play steam on it. I have the footage for this main project on an external HDD because there is 7TB of footage. I have keyboard, mouse, microphone, and then the external HDD.

Well, if you don't want to do the work I recommended earlier, you can wait for some help with the Logs. (That's a staff thing.) They might find a simpler solution.

Normally just double click it

Sorry, I mean to say I can't find the install directory, and the .bat file itself.

Hi Charles

Please refer to this step by step instruction from Dwaine for logs and NFO.

And please take a look at the FAQs at the top of the forum on information to include when making a report here. Exact Resolve details (from the About screen - version, build, studio), OS and GPU driver versions and details on peripherals.

You may also wish to try:
a. a clean installation of the nvidia studio drivers (i.e run the installer, choose Custom > Clean installation - to avoid gaming driver remnants)
b. if this is a self built system, please do a general sanity check - that the PSU is sufficient, the graphics card is properly seated in the appropriate slot and the displays are connected to the graphics card (and not the onboard graphics) etc.
c. As a diagnostic, try disconnecting all USB and bluetooth peripherals (apart from mouse and keyboard) when starting up.

Regards
Shrinivas
