Please please stop Resolve from Hogging File Permissions!

Oh how I am SO tired of seeing this! And then having to version my exports and eat up many times more hard drive space because I cant overwrite my last export. And working with a VFX guy who is trying to give me new versions of clips and he has to write new files instead of overwriting old versions which then in turn forces me to have to import the new version and conform lock it to replace the old one.

BMD, can we seriously please stop Resolve from hogging the file permissions, or at the very least, give me, the editor, the option to disable this? In the 15 beta versions this wasn't an issue but in the later betas this ability to stay in control of my own files was lost. I posted about this back then in 2018 also and this is still an issue.
Configuration:
Resolve Studio (Always the Latest)
Windows 11 Pro Workstation
32 Core AMD Ryzen Threadripper 256GB RAM
RTX 4090
RTX 3090
100G NAS
(1) 32" Ultra-Wide Display, (1) 4K 27” Display

Agreed. Resolve needs to release file locks on files that were previously opened. I mean.. Even if you breeze over it in the media tab and not even bring it into Resolve's media pool, it still gets locked. This is a slow-ball guys. Release all file locks when moving away from media tab for files that aren't actually open in Resolve. <3

There is another thread somewhere on the Forum about the same problem.
Each time a new version comes out I test if this is solved or not, and in 16 it's still there.

This weekend I compared the functionality with Vegas Pro:
I overwrite an audio file that is used in a timeline.
Switch back to Vegas and you get a dialog box asking the user what to do.
Search, browse, leave offline etc.

You can't overwrite a file while the timeline is playing (but that's to be expected).
That means that Vegas releases the file as soon as the timeline stops playing.
Resolve keeps locks on files even if they aren't used anymore.

You can overwrite your export and you can link to a new file with the same name.

I personally would like this confirmation to stay.
Always better to think again before deleting media. Disk space is nothing compare to lost footage.

This isn't about exports from Resolve or the risk of deleting media. It's about exports from other systems being prevented because Resolve locks files. For example, let's say you create some title animation in After Effects, then import that into a Resolve project. But you then notice you made a typo in the animation. So you go back to AE, fix and re-render. That's where the problem is. Resolve locks the original file so AE can't write over it. You either have to quit resolve, re-render the file, re-start resolve and re-load the project, or render as a different filename, keeping the risky erroneous file, import into Resolve and re-connect into the timeline.

Ideally the file locking should be an option in system setup, so that those of us that work in cross-platform collaborations aren't hindered. Or otherwise just a right-click on the clip to unlock it. Of course, the next issue is then the playback cache - if the timeline is cached and the referenced clip is altered, you can end up looking at an outdated version :-)

Got it, sorry for the misunderstanding.

There still logic in keeping safe media that is connected to open project. You can restart the program of course but I see why this can be annoying and to make this optional could be a solution.

A workaround for this is to switch to another project in Resolve, and it should release any files it's keeping it open. Of course, you can also quit Resolve, but I imagine this can be undesirable.

We are looking into improving this in the future, but please use the workaround for now.

As far as I can tell this is still a problem - unless there is some hidden setting I don't know about. It might be the most frustrating issue for me right now in Resolve, which I otherwise love. It really kills any sort of gfx/vfx workflow - even in the most simple cases.

Even after I delete the clip from a bin it still keeps the file locked (while the project is open), and I can't overwrite the file externally. Huh?

We really want to be able to update/overwrite a file without doing anything (deleting and re-importing it, or importing a new one, or closing the project or any other shenanigans). Other editing software handle this quite well - clips just update in place, no sweat.

You can do it!

+1 This has been a headache for many years now.

Other very interesting behaviour is that if you delete the file using the finder (working on Mac), and it goes offline in Resolve, and you replace the file with a new file with the same name (say your updated title from AE) - the file comes back online in Resolve, but still shows frames of the old file! How is this even possible? At this point I don't have render cache enabled. If I then relink to the same exact file, voila, it's updated to the new frames that are actually in the file.
