Audio Stuttering affecting Video Playback in DR

PostWed Apr 07, 2021 7:33 pm

I am having weird audio / video playback issues in Davinci Resolve Studio, that I was able to trace back to a problem between Davinci Resolve and my audio interface Steinberg UR28M. I've been having these issues since approx. end of last year. Across multiple of the last versions of Resolve.

This is a list of things happing:
Extreme stuttering of audiofiles (wav/mp3) playback in preview window, timeline playback is fine, though.

Some types of video do not play back smoothly anymore in preview window or timeline e.g. UHD h264 25fps 8bit 4:2:0 stutters but same specs with 10bit 4:2:2 clip works (no grades applied)

Audio recording in fairlight stutters extremly to a point that it is unusable

The playback stuttering seems to affect the whole system e.g. if I simultaneously run Spotify, the music will also stutter

When I open a project in Davinci Resolve Studio, the audio driver of my interface will show an USB error (see image attached). Does DR use ASIO?

Switching to a different audio device will eliminate the issues and I can work with all the files smoothly. But that is, of course, not a solution. I have been using the interface for a couple of years with DR now with no issues.

EDIT: I have tried to switch through sample rates, modes, buffer sizes and USB ports with no luck.
EDIT 2: This only happens in DR, no other program is affected.

My system:
DaVinci Resolve Studio 17.1.1 Build 9
Steinberg UR28 Audiointerface on Driver v2.0.3
AMD Ryzen 9 3900X on X570 Asus Mainboard
32 GB Ram
Asus TUF RTX3090 on 465.89 GameReady Drivers
Windows 10 Pro 20H2

I recommend using traditional audio connections rather than USB. They're better quality/more reliable.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Thanks, Jim. However, I need the interface for my XLR speakers. I would argue, that it doesn´t get more standardized than USB. How else would you connect an audio interface?

Update: I have hooked up a different (older) audio interface, the M-Audio Fast Track Pro, that I had laying around. Most of the issues are gone, it seems. Though, voice over recording with an XLR microphone still isn't really usable. The track does not stutter anymore, but there are now little twiches and glitches in the audio track, when I record.

Same situation here but with different hardware. I use Focusrite Scarlet and Red 4Pre. Can't record any voice overs beacuse of stuttering and droppouts. Very serious bug I think.

- checked sample rate (41Khz and 48Khz)
- checked buffer size (more glitches with higher buffer sizes)
- other applications recording without problems (Pro Tools)
- tried with and without Fixed Bus Mapping

Can't seem to get rid of the issue.

I thought you all might wanted to know: I just did a clean full reinstall of Windows 10, Resolve Studio 17.2 and all the drivers (the driver version of the audio interface hasn't changed, though). The stuttering still persists...

So, the problem has to be within Resolve. (again, all other software runs smoothly)
