Resolve Waveform Related UI Freezing

PostFri Apr 23, 2021 2:20 am

I have been struggling with an issue in DaVinci Resolve on Linux that causes the UI to lock up for long periods of time or indefinitely. I believe it is related to rendering audio clip waveform in timelines because when they are visible it behaves normally. But they can take a long time to render and may never fully render on larger projects for me.

I can reproduce this issue on my system by:
  1. Creating a new project (Disk DB or PostgreSQL)
  2. Add a clip with audio
  3. Before the waveform renders, attempt to go to the Deliver page
  4. UI is now frozen for a few seconds

There are a number of actions that could replace step 3 and freeze the UI. Another reliable one is to show stacked timelines and click the + to open another timeline. If I open an existing larger project though it will never finish rendering all the audio waveforms making some actions are effectively impossible.

I clean installed and updated the Blackmagic provided CentOS distribution as a final test for this and to get support and still have the issue.

My system and software:
CPU: Intel i9-9900kf
RAM: 32GB
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1080 ti
Additional: Intensity Pro 4k
DaVinci Resolve Studio Version: 17.1.1
Nvidia Driver Version: 460.73.01

I've also included the Captured logs.

I've had some UI freezes on linux as well. At first I thought it was because of AMD card/driver so I switched to NVidia but got some there as well. In some instances I had to kill resolve to restart it ...

Didn't really track down / find a way to reliably reproduce though.

I ended up doing some more digging into how the waveforms are stored and trying to figure out if there was something happening with the cache files themselves. I eventually started trying different storage configurations for the CacheClip storage and found out that it was because the files were being stored and accessed over an NFS connection to my project server. I changed the connection protocol to SMB/Samba and the issues have all been completely eliminated. This is over a dedicated 10Gb Ethernet connection so it shouldn't be any kind of network issue. After I discovered that I did some more reading and found that NFS is not well suited to the type of file access that cache files need.

Hopefully this may help someone else out there having similar issues. The storage interface for the drive(s) containing the CacheClip folder are important and moving it somewhere faster might make rendering waveforms more reliable.
