Archives fail w long filenames

PostFri Apr 23, 2021 2:03 pm

I've tried creating a .dra of a finished project by "Exporting Archive," and it failed several times at various files with long or unique filenames. Maybe it's specific characters in the filename causing it to fail? Also tried "Media Management" and tried copying all the files in my finish project's timeline to another drive. It went overnight, was 85% complete and failed at another long filename. Why is Resolve's media management/archiving so sensitive? If I can import a clip/file into my bin, shouldn't Resolve be able to copy it to an archive? I now have to way to create an archive or media manage the timeline due to these issues. Is there a work-around? A fix? Im using the lastest version of Resolve 16. Havent upgraded bc I was finishing this project, and I've upgraded early in the past and been crippled by bugs.

What file names are causing an issue?

Good question. These are causing it to fail:

"portrait-of-benjamin-franklin-boston-1706-philadelphia-1790-scientist-and-politician-ca-1785-painting-by-joseph-duplessis-siffred-1725-1802-oil-on-canvas-united-states-of-america-18th-century-54077 (1).jpg"

"05.28.20 WA Officials Admit to Including Gunshot Victims in COVID-19 Death Count.jpg"

"A059_01272325_C001.braw"

"2021.03.16 - unvaccinated-will-not-be-able-to-return-to-a-normal-life-2021-03-14-698e72e8-8346-11eb-be22-32d331d87530_story-html-1615928865473.png"

All of these files were successfully imported into Resolve, but I cannot get them exported out of Resolve. There are probably dozens more, but I cannot rename them all, re-edit them into the project and re-export.

I think I want to see this film once it's done. ;)

I'd advise using shorter names. Some of those are insane. But if the BRAW clip is also failing, name length likely isn't the issue.

Unfortunately, I don't user the Archive feature much. It could be a bug.

But Archives aren't the only path available. My backup procedure is to simply have all media in a second location with an exported .drp file.

Hah. it's already done, hence trying to archive the project. Link below. And yes I know they are long filenames. Most of the time I just download files and dont bother changing the names. I just import them right into Resolve. In the past I've saved all media to the project folder so every piece of media is in one spot. This project however required so many elements that I may use in other projects, I kept them in other folders sorted according to the content. I figured when done with the project, I'd just archive it, and it will pull all the media used into one place (which it is supposed to do). Obviously I didn't anticipate the function not working.

I'm going to add "don't use long file names" to the list of instructions for clients for project file turnovers. To me, maybe a maximum of maybe 100 characters should be enforced. 205 characters (shown in the o.p.'s jpg file) is crazy/nutty/excessive.

Resolve Collect might do what your looking for but I'm not sure about the long file names.... guess it's worth a try.

Good Luck !!
