Slow and choppy 1080p/4k Playback (not utilizing whole pc)

PostTue Apr 27, 2021 4:24 pm

I have similar issues on a desktop (ryzen 5 2600, 32gb of 3200mhz ram, rx570). I use the studio and despite hardly ever topping 70% utilization in playing back either 1080p 60 or 4k 24. I have exhausted the options of proxy media and resolutions, nothing is helping. I also don't go over 3% GPU utilization.

Thank you to all of those who offer some advice.

When I am trying play the video on the time line even though after creating the proxy video the playback is very choppy and lot of shuttering. BMD needs to fix this issue asap as we are unable to edit videos at all and this is hampering a productions.

There are lot of bugs specially for video playback on the timeline

Hope we can get fix at the least

Leo, what sort of media are you using and what is its framerate? No problem here with edited and graded 50fps HD MP4 (h264). I also have smooth playback of 50 fps UHD h264 timelines if I select Playback/Timeline Proxy Mode/Half Resolution, and also have Show All Video Frames enabled. With a 25fps UHD timeline I can have the Timeline Proxy Mode set to off.
System specs are in my Signature below.
Resolve Studio 20.0 build 49
Dell XPS 8700 i7-4790, 24GB RAM, 2 x Evo SSDs, GTX1060/6GB (572.16 Studio Driver), Win10 Home, Speed Editor, Faderport 1, Calibrated Eizo ColorEdge CS230 + BenQ & Samsung monitors for UI, Canon C100mk2, Zoom H2n.

Thank you Charles

My Timeline 1920*1080 HD 30 FPS

Source Footage : 30FPS

Please find the Specs on my Signature.

I normally edit 1080p and while working i will convert the source media to proxy media and specs that are sufficient for me .

Show All Video Frames is already enabled

Still the playback is choppy

"BMD needs to fix this issue asap as we are unable to edit videos at all and this is hampering a productions."

AMD Ryzen 3 1200 Quad-Core Processor
DDR4 - 40 GB
NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 4GB

Your processer is only # of CPU Cores: 4 # of Threads:4
Memory Channels:2, with 2 channels... why 40GB ram ?

Your gpu is only PCI Express 2.0, and from June 2014

The GeForce GT 730 comes in 2 different flavors, one of which is compute capability 3.5,
the other is compute capability 2.1 ?

Leo, If you have to use proxy media to cope with that footage it says that your computer and or your GPU is not capable of running Resolve properly. Not something that "BMD needs to fix". Having an odd amount of ram with possibly mismatched capacity between sticks will not help either.
In Preferences/Memory and GPU can you select CUDA and not OpenCL? If you can't select CUDA it means either your GT 730 is the M version which cannot run CUDA11 required by Resolve, or the GPU driver is out of date.

Hey Charles,

With respect to RAM its typo error it should have been 48 GB

My GPU memory is 4GB VRAM and its selected and detected as CUDA

I also have playback that makes Resolve unusable with version 17.2.

The playback is very consistently bad. It begins with static sounds and uneven slow playback and within a second settles into a jumpy playback that looks like playing from one compression keyframe to another and stopping at each keyframe. I'm guessing it stops every eight or 10 frames.

It's very consistent. Nothing changes it. I have tried all proxy settings, and tried render in place using ProRes Proxy to encourage easy playback. Nothing changes it.

I went back to 17.0 and the problem went away.

Leo, you cannot compare Vegas to Resolve, their requirements are different. I do not see an issue that BMD needs to fix.
This is an example of Resolve 17.2 Free running 25fps 1080p h264 in a UHD timeline on my computer. No Playback Proxy or Show All Video Frames is selected. As you can see it runs perfectly. Just shot this on my phone. Apologies for low audio level.

Resolve 17.2 is running quite well for me on the machines in my sig. Your Mac is 8 years old, that is an eternity in computer technology, even if it's called 'Pro'. It's always a good idea to try an older version of the software if your machine is getting old. You may be better off with 15 or 16.

I uninstalled the Studio completely and reinstalled the Studio now the playback is smooth even after selecting the proxy media.

The take away here is do not update the Studio instead fresh install the applications in this way the issue gets resolved
