Speed change (slow mo) + grain effect that runs at 25fps.

PostWed Apr 28, 2021 2:33 pm

Hi,

Wondering if it is possible to slow down a clip and add a grain effect. The grain effect cannot be slowed down and should seem like running at 25fps.

I can render and export a slow motion clip, then import and apply the grain fx, but it's quite a workaround.

Any solutions?

Cheers!

When I put a speed change on a clip of 50%, then apply the grain filter with a node. The animation of the grain is also slowed down in the effect. In PP this is not the case for instance.

I think I'm still not understanding.

The grain pattern will change for every frame. That's how grain works. So, if you change the frame rate...

I don't know how else it could work. And if it did work differently in another program, I'd say that program was working incorrectly.

OK, so you're saying the grain is not unique to every frame? The grain is not slowing down like it should?

Or is that clip from Premiere Pro? That is what you want to happen here?

Hi this is from resolve. I want the clip to be slowed down, but the grain must look as if it runs at 25fps. So the impression would be the clip is shot natively at high speed.

OK, I think I'm catching up. Thanks.

I ran a short test on the Edit page with retiming and the Film Grain effect, and I did see some weirdness. It's like the effect was only applied to the original frames, but not to the newly interpolated frames generated by the speed change.

I would consider that a bug. You might try doing the work in Fusion, see if it works any better. If not, then maybe try a Render in Place of the slowed down clip, then add the grain to that.

This is from PP and I want to achieve the same thing in Resolve:

Did you try applying the grain as a timeline or a shared node?

If in 17, do a Render in Place for the slo-mo, then add the grain. If 16, use a Compound clip.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.
