Workflow advice for multi-cam talking-heads

PostSun May 02, 2021 11:57 pm

My business partner and I recorded ourselves separately (on our iPhones) in front of green screens while having a conversation over Zoom to create ~10 instructional videos to post on Udemy. As a newbie Resolve user I'm very impressed with the capabilities but not sure of the best way to organize myself and the workflow as I go through processing each pair of clips. Ideally I'll have some shared resources (adjustment clips saved in power bins for example?) that enable me to make the clips in each video quickly look and sound consistent across all videos, as well as save time by not having to make the same basic edits for each clip.

The desired end result is 10 separate videos, one for each lesson, the two of us talking side-by-side, with occasional single-head overlays. The raw footage I'm starting with is a single clip per person per video. I start out lining up the two clips on two tracks, then eventually have slides (still images) come and go on the top track. I've only done the first two videos, as separate projects, though I could combine them if that makes the workflow easier.

Some edits, like simple color correction (she's a little pale, I'm a little ruddy) and audio improvements (she's boomy, I'm muffled) should be applied to all the clips of the same person but not shared between people. Likewise, since we recorded against a green screen, I'm cropping and zooming each clip similarly by person and using the (new?) 3D keyer on the Edit page to get us side by side in front of a neutral background.

Then there are the cuts and trims, where I remove "umms" and goofs and such that require the same cuts to both tracks. It looks like under some conditions, edits I made to a clip aren't carried over if I split the clip, so I've taken to using compound clips, but I could be there might be implications to those that I'm not aware of.

In any case, I'd really appreciate some advice or suggestions for workflows regarding what order to make the various edits, and which of the edits can be saved for reuse so I'm not redoing the same steps 10 times. In summary, here are the common edits across all clips of the same person:

1. Green screen removal
2. Cropping and zooming to line our two heads up
3. Color correction
4. Audio correction

Thank you for any help you can provide!

Jenny
