Crash on entering Media pool

PostMon May 03, 2021 7:22 am

Hi, I'm a new user and I absolutely love Resolve.
I have it running on an under-specced system, so wanted to get it going on a slightly better specced one with room for upgrades.

Regrettably Resolve crashes when I enter the media pool screen. Just exits the application. It happens both when I enter the media pool screen without trying to add media as well as when I try to drag & drop media on any other screen (guess it tries to switch to media screen at that instance).

I have tried all kinds of solutions I found on the forum, regrettably without any improvement.
I tried Resolve v16.2.8.005 and a v15 as well.
Manually updated the NVIDIA GPU driver to be sure it is the latest version, checked all Windows updates.

Hopefully I'm following protocol here and not forgetting any useful info. Would anybody be able to help me figure out where to look for a solution?

System info:
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3470 CPU @ 3.20GHz, 3601 MHz, 4 core
8Gb RAM (soon to be 16Gb)
Running 64-bit Windows 10 Pro
GPU is NVIDIA Geforce 9500 GT (1Gb)
Monitor connected with DVI (not sure if that valuable info, but just to be sure)

Without getting a new GPU you are wasting your time. That 9500 is so underpowered it's a wonder that it will actually open Resolve. The very minimum amount of GPU vram is 2GB. For Resolve 16.2.8 and up you need a GPU, if Nvidia, which will run CUDA 11.
These are the recommended minimum requirements.
Resolve Studio 20.0 build 49
Dell XPS 8700 i7-4790, 24GB RAM, 2 x Evo SSDs, GTX1060/6GB (572.16 Studio Driver), Win10 Home, Speed Editor, Faderport 1, Calibrated Eizo ColorEdge CS230 + BenQ & Samsung monitors for UI, Canon C100mk2, Zoom H2n.

Hi Charles, thanks for your feedback.
I noticed, but assumed that couldn't be the reason for crashing, since the laptop I'm currently running Resolve on has similar GPU specs (or worse even): Intel HD Graphics 520 (1Gb).

Could a GPU with under-req RAM be the source of crashing?
Is there a way to be sure it is the GPU that causes it?

I'd be tempted to swap the current one for a GeForce GTX 1060 6Gb and see if it solves the issue.
You reckon there is a good chance that will solve it?

According to Nvidia, the GT 9500 dates from 2008, has only 512MB of vram, only supports OpenCL 1.1. It will certainly not support CUDA 11 which Resolve requires.
I use a 6GB GTX 1060 with no problems. Make sure you use an up to date driver. You should then be able to use CUDA instead of the slower OpenCL.
This is my GPU page in Resolve.

Hi Charles, yes I noticed, that was already part of the confirmation I was trying to find.
However, the problem could still be in any number of factors.

Investing in an appropriate graphics card would rule the graphics card out as the source of the crash.
I guess I should do that and post feedback here whether it resolves the crash or not.

If not, back to the analysis, I guess, right?

My thinking is the same as Charles'. You need better hardware. I think it may be wasted effort to even try before you get that.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Hey there! I'm also having an issue that causes DRS to crash randomly but specially every time I hover the mouse over the fusion titles tab. The later happens EVERY time I try, guaranteed.

This is my Mac current information:

And this is how I've set my Memory/GPU:

I'm getting a corrupted build message after every crash, but it's in Spanish don't know if this is going to help you guys understand (I hope so!). Sometimes I get this, sometimes just a generic corruption message instructing to download the app again:
\U201CResolve\U201D está dañada y no se puede abrir. Elimina \U201CResolve\U201D y vuelve a descargarla de App Store.

Which translates as:
\U201CResolve\U201D is damaged and cannot be opened. Delete \U201CResolve\U201D and download it again from the App Store.

All this said, I've already downloaded de app several times, completely deleted it before re-downloading (the app and all secondary folders and apps), and reinstalled but the issue keeps repeating exactly in the same way. I'm desperate! I need to deliver a piece with titles to a client and there's no way I can work with this version of DRS... :(

By the way, I've tried in several Mac computers, laptop, iMac and Mac Pro... same issue, same result.

Any idea that could help me?
