Different NTSC aspect ratios in Edit & Color page viewers ??

PostSun Jun 09, 2019 11:17 am

Ripped a DVD and transcoded it to a tif sequence in Media Encoder; this loads into Resolve 16b4 and works as expected. BUT for NTSC (@720x486 or 720x480) the aspect ratio appears to be different in each viewer.

This mismatch appears, for example, as with a face that is fatter in one viewer compared to the other. There does not seem to be a mismatch problem with other source resolutions, such as HD or UHD.

One can easily create test circles (as the human eye is very good at seeing out-of-round circles) to see the mismatch in each viewer. And seeing the circle mismatch would seem to eliminate the source tif sequence in troubleshooting.

Yes, there are many sizing, scaling and aspect ratio adjustment options available in the Project Settings, Edit page Inspector and in the Color page. Those adjustments do seem to work as expected.

But because all of these changes are also reflected in the other viewer, the mismatch persists.

Must be missing something simple and perhaps obvious. Any clues???

Thanks,
Mike

Resolve has NTSC and NTSC DV presets (both for standard and wide screen) which are all different.

To make sure the aspect ratio is correct enable the Safe Area, enable Aspect and select the appropriate aspect ratio.

Thanks, Cary; Yes, there are several flavors of NTSC. But, having verified that the original file is indeed 720x486 and nevertheless experimenting with Resolve's several NTSC options, the mismatch between Edit and Color page displayed aspect ratios remains.

Tried them all: NTSC as standard definition, DV, 16x9, DV 16x9, and so on.

In short, regardless of the format option chosen in Project Settings, the Edit and Color page are interpreting the same image differently.

The image in either viewer is not cropped horizontally or vertically. But it is stretched horizonally in the Edit page. (For example, faces appear too fat.) The Color page seems to be correct. (And the Deliver page also outputs the expected aspect ratio.)

The Edit page, however, appears to stretch the image horizontally, as though it--the Edit page, not the Color page-- is interpreting the pixels differently with respect to rectangular pixels.

Gotta be missing something simple.

Thanks all,
Mike

It's rather known problem, but this is just a preview. Export should be fine.

While yes the exports are fine but now with remote workflows I am often sharing my UI screen with clients so when I flip between the two pages the difference is very apparent.

I posted the below on another tread outlining the exact issue.

Workflow:

Working and delivery main content in HD. Raw footage is 3200X1800. Everything works as expecting.

To deliver in SD centercrop-
Duplicate all HD timelines and change to NTSC -

Timeline Res: 720X486 NTSC
PAR: 4:3 standard definition
Mismatched resolution files: Scale full frame with crop.

Monitor-
Video Format: NTSC

Output-
Use timeline settings

So why is there a difference in the image when simply going from the edit page to the color or deliver page. Upon export everything looks fine so this is only an issue when monitoring and again it looks correct on my external monitors when in the edit page - but stretched in the UI. No matter what settings I tweak there is always an image difference when going from the edit page to the color page. Thanks in advance for any help.

This most likely is related to Resolve old engine which is not patched yet. Maybe there are some problems which make it difficult, so BM left it.

Only solution atm. is a hack which involves using timeline resolution at 1:1 pixels aspect, so eg. if you work with PAL 16x9 then it would be 1024x576. You just have to remember to change it to proper SD size before final render. For other aspects just multiply height by desired aspect.

Awesome, thanks for the tips, Andrew. I hope this helps anyone else and that BM has a more streamline approach to fix this in the near future
