Applying LUT breaks playback

PostMon May 17, 2021 1:37 am

Experiencing a new issue with LUTs in Resolve Studio.

First appearance was after upgrading to 17.2. I immediately uninstalled and reverted to 17.1.1 but the issue persists.

I pulled in some Canon R5 4k 50p IPB footage which has worked fine in the past. This footage is CLOG3 which I haven't imported before (previously CLOG).

Normally, I would pull this in, apply Canon's LUT and then generate optimised media.

The issue I'm having is that as soon as I apply the LUT, ALL playback breaks. All thumbnail previews fail to load -- everything is a blank square.

Timeline playback also impossible, although the audio meters move.

I can't even quit the program. Quitting results in a hang and I have to force quit. Reopen Resolve and playback still broken. The only thing that fixes it is a restart. But this morning, I was able to recreate the problem with DJI Air 2s DLOG footage and a DJI LUT. Only now, restart isn't helping. ALL playback appears completely broken.

System specs attached.

My guess, the old hardware config is just not able to process what you are asking of it.

make a two clip project archive, one short canon and one short DJI.
Make sure the LUTs are in the project drp.
Put them on dropbox or the like so some one can download and test on current hardware.

transcode your footage to prores

a xeon has no quicksync for working with H264/H265 footage

and so on:

As much as I'm not a guy who generally uses LUTs, there are times when a LUT is the fastest way to get there. As one example, I just dealt with some Sony SLog3 material, and I defy you to grade it by hand without a LUT or a Transform -- it's a really screwy format.

In general, I do agree that with something like a DSLR, you can futz with it and get a normal picture out of it with some manual work. And I also totally agree that H.264 is rough to deal with in post.

agree, but in resolve CST is an important starting point for grading.
especially for difficult material
