Resolve 17.2 : Timeline Playback at 4FPS, UHD footage

PostWed May 19, 2021 11:50 pm

Since upgrading to v17.* from v16, the performance has been in general quite bad for me.
I have tried most of the tips/tricks etc , optimized/proxy etc, to no avail and was wondering if someone can point out, if I am missing a trick here.

The main problem for me is the a 4fps-10fps timeline playback of a UHD source (Panasonic/mp4)
(Forgot to add) Even when it says its playing at 25 fps, its very visibly choppy.

System : I7 6800k(overclocked 10%), Nvidia 1080 (8GB), 64GB@3200 RAM
Resolve runs on boot drive , a crucial SATA III SSD(40% free)
Resolve cacheclips/capture/proxymedia are on a M.2 Samsung SSD ( 80% free)
Video files are on Crucial M.2 SSD(40% free)

Project has one timeline , with 2 video tracks(main + decorators) and two audio tracks, so nothing fancy, duration is around 10-15 mins.

Also, most of the times, even though I select a quarter(or even less resolution) in timeline proxy mode, resolve does not pick it up...not sure why this is either.

Its really frustrating as I did not have these issues with Resolve 16, so I am thinking of downgrading and was wondering, if anyone managed to do it.

All clues welcome.

What specific GPU are u using, and which specific GPU driver?
I would try a complete re-install, not an update, of the GPU driver.

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 G1 Gaming RGB 8192MB GDDR5X PCI-Express Graphics Card (GV-N1080G1 GAMING-8
Driver is v466.47
I will try uninstalling Nvidia GPU drivers and re-installing them again.

Thanks

Thanks for coming back.
I am using a
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 G1 Gaming RGB 8192MB GDDR5X PCI-Express Graphics Card (GV-N1080G1 GAMING-8

Nvidia drivers before clean install 466.* (latest as of day before)
Nvidia drivers after downgrade(now) :- 457.30

Also I tried doing a clean install of Nvidia drivers (and also downgraded) it , but same results.
Its shows 25 fps after few seconds of starting playback in timeline but with very visible stuttering.

What does changing the timeline resolution to HD do for the issue?

You're using Free or Studio version Manish? (Don't assume, check.)
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Hi, I have the same problem since the last version – 17.2.
after hard work on the Cut page, the software gets stuck, every selected stuff goes very slow, all video on the timeline starts then stops, then jumps.
The problem started 4 days ago when I tried to change the Full HD of timeline resolution to 4k mode because the original video was in 4k.
Today the same occurred, changing the recorded scale to full scale.
After that, I tried to fix the problem in several ways:
Changes Proxy Mode to Quarter Resolution, Render Cache to Smart and User, tried the Optimized Media mode… Rendered all video with some basic color grading and tried to play on the timeline – got stuck, anyway.
Installed the last driver of the Nvidia GeForce – the Studio version.
So, the problem insists. As I see, no way to fix it by my side.
Please, somebody, advise, how to solve the issue.
Additional info:
Notebook: MSI GP63 Leopard 8RE-665XES Intel Core i7-8750H/16GB/1TB+256SSD/GTX 1060/15.6"
Video settings: recorded on Atomos Ninja V (24fps, 4k HQ, Clog 3, Gamut BT.709, Codec ProRes, Compression 422, HLG).

Free version doesn’t use the GPU for decoding so that leaves the cpu. I’d remove the overclocking.

U can also check the clip frame rate matched the timeline rate.

I think I have tried everything I know and thanks for help so far.

@Peter : Could you advise if there is a possibility to downgrade to Resolve 16.
(can run queries on Postgres etc, if it helps)
If not, the only other option for me will be to start from scratch in Resolve 16.

(Edit): Few more points...
1. I also tried re-installing it on the fastest SSD in my system(Samsung) , different to the boot drive,
just in in case..no improvement so far.
2. I left resolve running overnight (while generating proxy) , next morning everything was smooth...but the moment I added another clip (from the same video source file), it went choppy again.

I have also found the playback performance unusable in 17.2.
Proxy media clips also seem to stutter.

OK Manish, assuming the timeline specs properly match the footage specs, this should give you smooth performance.

1. Create Optimized Media for all the footage using Cineform at 1/4 resolution.
2. Make sure OM is being used under the Playback menu.
3. Make sure Proxy media isn't being used.
4. Turn off Timeline Proxy Mode.

Thanks Jim.
I tried that, but I still faced the same issues.
I downgraded to 17.1.1, just as a blind shot(eventually readying myself to downgrade to 16)...and against all my expectations it is working again.
So I am all good for now...for now I will stick with 17.1.1.
All the same, I appreciate the prompt response and engagement from everyone.
Thanks a lot.

There's only two reasons that those instructions wouldn't work in 17.2.

1. You didn't follow them correctly.
2. You have a system issue.

If the latter is true, it may affect other things. Would you care to explore that, or just keep using 17.1.1 for now?

You might be right Jim and thanks for the offer.
I will continue with 17.1.1 for now as I need to finish this project.
I did follow your recommendation, unfortunately those did not work for me in 17.2.
Given that its works straight off the bat in 17.1.1 and I have the same settings, suggests to me the problem 'probably' lies elsewhere.
All other stuff on my system, work as expected so far, "knock on wood :) ".
