Extreme laggy behaviour on previously capable system

PostFri May 28, 2021 11:55 am

Hi,

My older K6000 GPU died and when I had a break I updated to 17.2 and installed a 3090. I read Peter Chamberlain's advice elsewhere to do a full NVIDIA driver install and generally the computer itself is working well.

However, I am getting really laggy performance with general GUI style operations - far worse than my previous setup. Things like playback of clips with no grades, constant hiccups in playback, pauses playing between clips on a timeline and general application pauses that are really frustrating!

What's interesting is that if I persist then during course of the day the system gets better! Also in between these pauses I can tell the system is really powerful - it's like it's getting choked up by something.

Any pointers would be appreciated! I'm already on the latest studio drivers for that GPU and I have also completed a clean install of those drivers too. here is my diagnostic log:

You might try peeking into the Resource Monitor while things are glitchy to see if any process is hogging resources.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Hi Paul,

I've had UI-only latency starting in V15 with two GTX Titan-X cards. We have recently replaced the two with a single 3090. Still running V15.3. The UI performance has improved.

Some have said this issue has to do with the Wacom driver. It's possible. I use the tablet but it's hard for me to evaluate because I'm nowhere as fast using the mouse. Also, my home machine has a Wacom tablet and never had the UI latency on V15.3 although I use a really low end GPU.

I have also recently discovered that with the PostgreSQL server on a separate machine I can already feel the UI stickiness at 5 ms network latency. I use Live Save, but I don't think it matters.

Is the setting for the gpu setup for auto or cuda?

Try switching that to auto and back to cuda, I saw oddities at times.

Hi Both,

Thanks for the suggestions - Igor, I still use the wacom from the DS days - this sounds very likely as i've not upgraded my driver in a long time! And Walter - that's a great one - I will try for sure and report back.

I'm updating because of those Google searches for others!

I'm sorted now. I did a full windows update, but crucially I also did a "clean install" of the latest nvidia driver. I had read this advice before (from a Peter Chamberlain post) and assumed it meant uninstall and reinstall the nvidia driver - but there is a specific option in the nvidia installer that is for a "clean install" - maybe it cleans registry entries too?

Anyway, this turned my machine from a lame dog to iron man in a few minutes!

Thanks for the input Igor and Walter.
