Optimized media not working

PostThu Jun 10, 2021 4:38 pm

Hi,

I create optimized Media and the Playback is not changing at all. It has also no impact on the export time (i read online i was suppoed to go faster with the export option: "use optimized media"). The problem remains the same after the update on the last version of DVR. I am on a MacBook Air M1 with 16Go Ram.

Thank you for helping me solving my problem...

The M1 is very impressive for an entry-level machine. But as soon as you use any demanding effects the GPU is showing its limits.
Optimized Media don’t help with that, since the hardware is already decoding most formats in realtime, but caching in an appropriate codec or Render in Place can help with final render.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

You do not want to export with Optimized media because it is second generation often to a 1/2 or 1/4 resolution image in a much lower quality codec. It's only used for editing and grading.

I wonder if you have set up Optimization correctly.

I have a heard time thinking you are so rushed you can't export your finished project while you eat dinner or while you sleep.

The comment about most codecs are rendered in real-time misses the point that when playing Optimized footage one is working with 1/2 or 1/4 resolution video in a very EZ to decode format.

Exactly. Optimized media is for machines having a hard time decoding your sources, not just for faster rendering.
But, of course, if your sources are hard to decode, it'll play a role when rendering too. You can set up a good codec like Cineform or DNxHR (on PC) and with the target resolution and use those files for delivery. Depending on the rest of your hardware, this won't always help with smooth editing.

That's good to know thank you all. I was thinking there could be some kind of bug with the new Mac cheap, like there was with the Poxy medias before they corrected that with the last version.
