VFX Plates Delivery Process in Resolve

PostFri Jun 11, 2021 6:54 am

Hello. I edited a independent film on resolve and it had many vfx shots . So i seperated vfx shots and placed them on a seperate timeline so that i can easily render the timeline as individual clips but the problem comes with the naming of clips. I tried so many ways like i placed a clip marker on each clip and named the marker and in the delivery page i selected custom name with variable %markername .. but it is not working . So if anyone knows how to assign custom clip name to each clip on the timeline can you please help me ?

In 17.2 it is supposedly possible to rename individual shots on timeline: ”Support for custom naming for individual timeline clips”. Haven’t tried myself yet and don’t know if they follow through individual clip delivery.

In older versions custom names is a major pita, I’m not aware of any automatic way to produce them except scripting your way through it somehow (can’t pinpoint exact process unfortunately). Markers supposedly should work but in practice I’ve seen what you see, they don’t.

Just now i found a process

- Change the clip name in clip attributes on the timeline to the name we want for our vfx workflow
- in the deliver page set individual clips and custom name under the file section
- Then in the Custom name Box type the variable %clipname (this changes each clip to the clip name we assigned in the timeline)
- Then in the File Subfolder name place the same variable %clipname(this creates a folder for each clip with the clipname we assigned and no need of checking any other boxes. if you want to start the image sequence start at a 1 or 1001 like that means check "each clip starts at frame" and set the number you like)

This is the process which worked for me at present with some effort of renaming the clip names .. If any simple method alternative to this is in your knowledge kindly help me with that.

May I ask why do SFX clips need to be copied to a new layer? Is that also true for multiple layers, i.e. in case of many green screen keying composite?

I also have this naming issue. I have to output clips in seperate folders for a VFX team, who use other software to do VFX.

Wish this was more intuitive.

If you place vfx shots on separate track you can easily render out just those shots by disabling other tracks. Otherwise it would render all shots you have on timeline.
