lost connection to database on external drive

I have a database on an external drive. It was been working perfectly.

The database no longer shows up in the projects panel. The projects panel now tells me the database is not connected. I try a re-connect, and it tells me it's already connected.

Thoughts?

How is that drive formatted?
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

"Was" being a reeeeeally good reason to use only internal drives for this work. ;)
