Sound Library Sample File Location?

PostTue Jun 29, 2021 3:33 am

Is there a way to determine the file location of a particular sound in the Sound Library? It isn't an option in the list column dropdown.

Also, is there a way to list what "libraries" are in a particular database? I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this Sound Library logic. Any advice would be appreciated.

I did just discover from another user here that a search of *** will list everything (which I couldn't find reference to in the manual).

The Sound Library's search functionality doesn’t require you to know the specific file name or location of the source, since it searches the file's description metadata in addition to the file name.

e.g. The following sound file includes extensive metadata in the description field to complement the BEXT metadata to quickly and easily locate the required sound:

“FormulaSeries_Cars_F1_RedBull_MediumDistance_Passing_Right-Left.wav”

Microphone Type (MKH8040)
Microphone Array Type (ORTF)
Microphone Distance (Medium)
Recording Device (Sound Devices MP10T)
Recorded by (Reynaud)
Recording Year (2019)
Recording Month (February)
Recording Location (Killarney)
Sound Library (FormulaSeries)
Object Category (Vehicle)
Object SubCategory (Racing)
Object Type (F1)
Object Manufacturer (Honda)
Object Model (RA619H)
Object Behaviour (Passing)
Sound Direction (Right To Left)

It would be really cool if you could see this info directly, and perhaps even change or add to it, in the Sound Library. Perhaps that is in the works. Presently, besides the awesome functionality once you find your sample, it just feels like once you add all your libraries, you're just digging around a box in the dark, at the mercy of file names and metadata. I asked about file location because as mentioned in another post, some of my old SFX libs are folder-based - all the Drones in one folder, Ambience, Animals, Impacts. Being able to look at things this way lets me look at all my Weather sounds together in one place, regardless of file name or metadata. I can pull up the folder and just go through them one by one and know I've seen them all.

I realize this might be considered an archaic way of searching, given today's meta-meta-meta and fuzzy searches, but there is a reason all known file systems are tree structured. :D
