Feature Request: user-selectable ISO recording channels

PostTue Jul 06, 2021 7:36 pm

Hi all.. I just submitted this feature request.. well, I think I did at least via the "e-mail us" link.. there's no confirmation after pressing the submit button, so.. who knows?

Wondering if this would benefit others here too, and if so, perhaps we could get more support if more expressed interest?

BACKGROUND:
Currently, the ATEM ISO models allow users to select "record ISO" (Y/N) and "record Program" (Y/N). When enabling ISO recording, all 8 input channels are recorded, as well as an additional 8 .WAV files generated for audio.

PROBLEM:
1. There are times we only want to ISO record one or two input channels. Because we can't select which channels to record, all the inputs are recorded requiring faster, and larger disks than we'd otherwise need if we could choose which inputs/channels to record.

2. People want a way to record program (PGM) in high quality. Currently, the PGM is recorded only using the streaming bitrate which, while streaming, is typically set to a low 3-5Mbps. The workaround is to split the PGM out of one of the HDMI Outs, and loop it back into an input channel since the ISOs are encoded using a much higher bitrate (> 45Mbps). Unfortunately, this uses up an input port.

FEATURE REQUEST:
1. allow users to choose which of the ISO inputs are recorded, instead of it being "all or nothing" like it currently is.

2. let users choose the quality of the PGM recording (a) streaming quality (b) ISO quality (or user-definable)

Thank you for considering these enhancements -- I know it would help many, if not all, of your ATEM users.

Wow this is such a perfect write up of the two big issues with the ISO devices right now! Great work.

I've also been frustrated with not having variable bitrates and not being able to select all 8 inputs or nothing for the ISO record (since on the Extreme ISO I recently got, am only using 5 HDMI channels and only 1 audio channel).
Have submitted request forms too so yep hopefully we see a change soon!

I've been missing this feature already on the Atem mini Pro ISO, but I'm also thinking of upgrading to Extreme ISO for it's feature set. It feels dumb having to write all those unnecessary or empty files when not needed. Especially when SSDs have a limited number of write cycles before they fail. And of course, as the OP said we’d be able to record longer and use slower media too.

Has anyone ever heard whether Blackmagic has considered developing this feature? It seems rather obvious to me.

Any news, or chance this will be added?

I’m still on hold to purchase the extreme ISO.
It would be useful for its other features, but I only need to record 4 ISO channels at a time.

So.. I guess not a feature Blackmagicdesign is interested in adding then?
