ProArt Monitor Setup for Davinci Resolve

PostSun Jul 11, 2021 12:21 pm

Hello there,

I have Davinci Resolve Studio & currently building my expertise in editing and color grading. Currently I've ordered the Asus Proart PA32UCG monitor as well. (https://www.asus.com/Displays-Desktops/ ... y-PA32UCG/)

My question
1) Can I use 1 monitor - Asus Proart PA32UCG to Edit, Color Grade & Preview my content?
2) If I have another same model/monior to view clean feed - Do I need to add Decklink or connect the monitor to my RTX3090 through Display Port or HDMI?

Really appreciate your input.

Thanks
Paul

1. Can you? Sure. I do. But, it's not the...'correct'...way to do things.

2. Clean Feed is good for client monitoring of content, but for serious Color work, a Decklink is still the best option as it removes variables that alter the signal from the signal path, thus ensuring an accurate image on screen.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Are you making content for paying clients or just for yourself? For clients I would go the Decklink to calibrated display route.
I only make videos for myself but have two displays. If I'm using the clean feed while grading it goes to a calibrated Eizo Coloredge monitor. I just use an ordinary Ben-q monitor for the Resolve UI. For what I do this works very well without a Decklink.

Hello Charles,

I'm making content for myself for now. But I'm learning HDR Grading in Dolby Vision. This is for my future projects that I plan to work towards paid projects potentially in the near future.

Let me know does it make sense to make 2 ProArt PA32UCG monitors to maintain consistency between GUI and CleanFeed or get a less expensive 32" primary monitor for Davinci Resolve GUI

Thanks,
Paul

Paul, this is not something I can really answer. You need some input from editors and colorists doing this professionally.

Read page 2515 of the Resolve 17 manual, "Limitations When Grading With the Viewer on a Computer Display." This explains why it's unwise to try to use a computer display for final color correction. The same problem exists with the "Clean Feed" output, since it's not color managed.

Don't try to make judgements on uncalibrated GUI displays. That will lead down a perilous road of pain and suffering. And if you do look at anything in the GUI display, don't compare it to what you see in Resolve.

The Clean Feed can be perfectly adequate if you're only editing in Resolve and don't need to make any precise color judgements on the fullscreen preview display. If you do need to see accurate color, you really need a color-managed output with a Blackmagic display device, plus a calibrated display. And to calibrate it, you need proper test signals, probes, and software outside of Resolve to ensure that it meets normal industry standards.

Steve Shaw of LightIllusion has a good essay on the importance of using grading displays for judging color:

Hello Marc,

Thanks for the reply. So for my PC, I have 2 options to choose from after speaking to a tech rep from BMD UK.

1) Thunderbolt4 PCIe Expansion card > UltraStudio 4K Mini (2019) > HDMI 2.0b > Acer Proart PA32UCG (Cleanfeed)
2) DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G (2014) > HDMI 2.0b > Acer Proart PA32UCG (Cleanfeed)

In either options - Should I connect a 32" 4K True 10bit Monitor through HDMI 2.1 or DisplayPort 1.4 for getting the best quality of color to view Davinci Resolve

Which solution would you recommend from the above considering that I'm pushing for HDR Grading on Dolby Vision on Resolve.

Thanks,
Paul
