Slow timeline scroll

PostFri Jul 16, 2021 7:34 am

I just upgraded my computer to Ryzen 9 5900X, Geforce RTX 3090, 32Gt RAM, m.2 SSD etc. So basically I have the best money can get, right? I done this to be able to edit 4K videos smoother. It was a "dia show" with my old PC even in 1080p.

But when I started to edit my first 4K project with this new PC, I was disappointed. When I have to move on timeline, there is so much delay on reviewing videot, that real-time scrolling is basically impossible. I have to click about to the point i want to move to, and then after a half a second I see where I am. And if I want to move 10 seconds forward from that point, I have to click again somewhere blind and hope that I end up in correct place.

Same thing when using jog control button (in timeline review or clip review window): it's so slow and moves with big steps and sound is not smooth at all, that it's impossible to use.

So something is very wrong in settings, or with my computer. My PC has quite slow latency RAM (22-22-22). Can that cause my problems? Or is editing 4K normally that slow? Or do I have some Resolve settings made wrong? Of course I had to re-install Resolve to my new computer, so I had to start from beginning. Maybe some quality settings are too good? review window resolution is 1080p, should I drop it even more? Some other settings that I should chance from defaults?

Which specific GPU driver is installed?

try generating Resolve diagnostic logs as per the FAQs and post here. Someone might be able to help

Are you editing H.264/H.265 videos in the free version of Resolve? If so, there's no hardware acceleration of these codecs in the free version, you need the Studio version (or transcode the files to an edit-friendly codec before editing, like DNxHR or CineForm).

While the Studio version enables hardware acceleration, support for specific variations of subsampling and bit depth depends on your hardware. Which camera are you using?

If not using H.264/H.265 and you're still having issues, try upgrading/downgrading GPU drivers.

Nvidia driver is 471.11.

I tested some tweaks: I first optimized my media, then changed timeline proxy resolution to quarter (tried half first but that was slot too). After that I got the same smooth user experience I had with my old computer (Intel i7 4770K and GTX 1060) when editing fullHD content. So this doesn't look very good.

Yes, I'm using a free version. Video is shot with iPhone 12 Pro Max, so it's .mov.

The fact is, I'm planning to buy retail version, and trying to figure out should I buy Resolve or Adobe Premiere, and to be honest this is one more thing that doesn't tilt a scale to Resolve side... (I also have had some problems with some "media offline" issues when capturing MP4 video with OBS Studio. Video looks perfect in VLC player, but when I bring it in Resolve, parts of it goes offline so I'm getting mostly those red notifications to my final video. That issue never got solved, I just had to convert video to other format and then it worked. Anyway, that's the other story but just tells that my Resolve relationship has been everything else but eternal happiness...)

The iPhone 12 shoots H.265 in an .mov container so you either have to transcode before editing or get the Studio version of Resolve. Then a 4K timeline shouldn’t be a problem at all with your hardware.

But, video shot on iPhone has a variable frame rate that can also cause issues. If I had to shoot on a phone I would use the FilmicPro app as it seems to avoid some of the pitfalls.

And again, don’t assume that the latest nVidia drivers are the best. With the RTX series there have been multiple releases where people had to go back to an older driver for full performance.

Ok, thanks Roger.

Just wondering am I surely going to get rid of this problem by paying the studio version, because more or less I don't need the other features of studio version. Of course I could "Handbrake" videos before bringing them to Resolve, but that takes time from actual editing. I'd rather want to buy this, because I think Blackmagic has created a very good product and they deserve my money. ;)

Optimized media helps a lot. Doesn't it really have any disadvantages for quality. Of course it takes time to optimize but that's one time job only.
