VFX Conform Hell

PostThu Jul 22, 2021 9:36 pm

Howdy Everyone!

Have a quick question. I'm working on a project with a chunk of VFX components. One shot consists of a heart coming out of a hand. I'm trying to connect this effect to the colored clip.

Is there an easy way to do this? Seems like there should be and my brain just isn't working right. I have a Linear EXR file.

Thank you so much!

I've tried putting it above my colored clip like a normal vfx; but it's not broken out.

Editor says it's "easily masked or keyed" but doesn't seem to be the case? Is there something I'm missing?

Right now, I have it on a composite "Add" at 40%. It's still affecting the colored clip; but just enough to be unnoticeable. However, this is not a fix, and more like a work around and I doubt It'll work for the rest of the vfx components like this.

I assume it has black around.
1) put it on a second layer
2) in color keys the hart or the black and invert the keys
3) right click in the node tree
4) “add alpha output”
5) connect the keys you create to that output (blue arrow to blue output)

It should work.

Thanks so much for the reply Walter. Utilizing the 3D Keyer and your method I was able to get it easily.

Thanks!

Walter, would your method work for the following? Instead of just a small heart, this one is a far larger and complex vfx asset; with a "roto" matte component.

One of the shots consists of a brain wrapping above the subject. I received the Brain Wrapper component as a Linear EXR. I also received a roto of the subject.

The issue I'm having is whenever I place the Linear EXR Brain Wrapper above my source clip with the color, the Linear EXR assset covers the subjects face. Is there an easy way of getting the Subject in front of the asset (I'm assuming it has something to do with the Roto of the subject component?

There's a similar issue with another one of the VFX assets; but that one consists of a hand enroaching on to the 3D space of the vfx. The Editor provided a roto of where the hand breaks the space as well.

For the roto mask part I saw you got an answer in Fu forum already, but regarding the elements themselves, it would make your life easier if they were produced with included alpha channel so you wouldn’t have to key stuff out. Since they are graphics it would be very easy to include the alpha, so I’d suggest asking your editor for proper elements with alpha channel.

In that case either the alpha is wrong or you're doing it wrong.
Since version 17.x Resolve should be able to work with embedded alpha channels on the timeline.
If it doesn't work for you something else is wrong.
