BMD, what is the difference between these two versions? Nothing noted on the website.

Glad you even mentioned this: I thought my system was not recognizing the "latest" update after getting ".2" installed.

This isn't the first time I've seen BMD release an update and then immediately release another internal update on top of that. First time I saw it was a compatibility issue with Apple Silicon machines - could be this is the same. Who knows... Oh right, BMD does but they're not talking. Again.

I thought it was a glitch at first, closed my project and reopened Resolve when I saw the popup for a new version.

Yeah, they should communicate better (in the popup for the new version) or on the forum at the same time.

It seems there was a pretty serious VST3 bug in build 8 that's fixed in build 9: https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=151089&p=805982

Me too. I assumed it was a bug in the "new release" announcement in Resolve, until I saw some discussion of it in the forum a few hours later.

It's incredibly bad practice to release two versions with the same version number, and with no announcement, no changelog, and not even a bump on the support page:

Why not 17.4.2.1?

It's not the first time this has happened and yes it is really bad practice.

Agreed :!: :!: :!:

And even more it is a waste of global resources by forcing thousands of useless downloads !!
If the user knows what's been fixed, one can decide if it's worth to download or not. In case of the VST plugins I would say less then 5% of the Resolve users are concerned.

No-one is forced to download anything.

Everyone should relax, a free bug fix isn't the end of the world. Even if it's a silent update. ;)

I found it funny.
It's free.
It fixes things.
if you paid any time in history for resolve, it is still free.
PPL complain about fixing the bugs and this version fix bugs.

But alas.... still complains... Damn if you do, Damn if you dont.....

What if i had the exact bug they fixed in Build 9? But I am on Build 8.

Hiding the fact that they have released a new version and not publishing a change log, I would have no way to know there is a fix available.

The real solution is to do some actual QA before they release a version, so they don't end up making nightly bug fixes trying to cover up their mistakes. But with the disaster we saw with the 17.4 release, it seems BM has abandoned all efforts to release a stable software.

Obviously in real life **** happens and this is not what they had planned, and someone had to weigh the pros and cons of doing it this way. If this was a bug that broke people's projects or wouldn't allow them to save then of course an update was needed. We don't know what workflow they have for releases. Maybe posting release information requires approval from people in a time zone on the other side of the world and the fix couldn't wait.

Being a back seat driver is the easiest thing in the world. I'm all for more information, but it's not always as simple as it sounds.
