File and Folder Locations

Hello All,

I'm new to this forum and a bit new to Resolve so this is something of a newbie question. Where does Resolve save my project files and can I change that location? How do I do that? What is the file extension for a resolve project file? I tried to search my file folders but came up empty.

On the Project Manager page if you put the mouse curser on the Database name it will show you the full path to its location. When creating a new database you can specify the location but it is recommended that it is on a permanently connected drive, preferably internal.

Resolve doesn't save individual project files on disk like Microsoft Word saves a .doc file. Instead, Resolve uses a Database system.

If memory serves this is covered well enough in the Beginner's Guide. That's the best place to start with Resolve.

Thank you Charles. It took a little poking around but I found them. I just want to be able to back them up or share with others working on the same project. And by "project" I don't mean a Resolve project, but the documentary project on road safety in our neighborhood that a group of us are working on.

And in addition to the database, you can always save a copy of your project to any location at any time using the Export Project... command [Cmd E (Mac) / Ctrl E (Win)]

Hi Jim,

I took your advice and downloaded the beginners training book as you advised. After spending a couple hours trying to follow and do the step by step they ask of you I'd have to say I don't recommended it. Buggie as can be. Finally came to a spot I couldn't get past because the files/folders wouldn't load even though they were where they told me to put them. Very frustrating.

I'm relatively new to Resolve and I spent a long time figuring this out when I first installed it too. I wish they'd allow bypassing the database so I can manage my own project files (like every other program I use), but it is what it is.

Charles Bennett showed how to find the location of your database (it will start with "Resolve Disk" <name of your database>) then inside that folder your projects are stored in:
...\Resolve Projects\Users\guest

Here you will see folders with the names of your projects (or folders if you created them in the project manager), which have a Project.db file inside them. I believe this is the project file, but it won't open from explorer, you have to open it from the project manager in Resolve.

When I first installed Resolve, it created the default database on my C drive, which I didn't want. To move the database I created a new database on my D drive, then copied the guest folder into the new database location and everything worked. I don't know if there is a better way to do it, but this worked for me.

Glad you got it working.

But I do find that Guide to be the best possible resource for new users. I went through it myself without issue.

It's in the manual. NO KIDDING! Just answer the question. If you don't know the answer but still want to comment.... look it up in the manual yourself first. Some people don't wanna look thru 2000 pages and might be on a deadline. Yes some of us are professionals who actually use the software to make money. Yes some of us are also in an industry union with credits and will still take the time to answer. Jeez gang
