Proxy files created with polywave linked sound won't play

PostMon Aug 01, 2022 6:11 pm

Hi Folks
I created proxies after I linked sync sound and, by design but to me oddly, the proxy files are created with the embedded polywave synced sound.
However, when I take my sources offline, the audio won't play.

If I take one of the proxy files and pull it into Resolve the audio from the file plays just fine.

I'm not surprised there's a problem here, because that's a lot of logic to keep track of. Too much in my opinion. I think proxies should be written to match as closely as possible the sources. But the Resolve design says otherwise. I hope they can make it work as designed! Right now it doesn't appear to be doing so.

If BMD can't easily repro this I'm happy to make a test case if asked.

When you say you took your source offline, did that include the linked audio files? If so, then the required linked audio for the clips is taken offline and I presume Resolve does not fall-back to embedded audio automatically. Not sure how I feel about that. I guess I wouldn't take audio sources offline since there isn't such a thing as 'proxy audio'. My brain is melting...

You're right I DID take the audio offline when I took the picture offline. And I agree with you that, in ordinary circumstances, that would be the answer - there's no proxy audio so I've got to put audio somewhere where it stays online.

BUT! Why else is Resolve writing the synced audio to the proxies if not to use it when the audio is offline? If it doesn't do so then again I'd say just put the original audio in the proxies.

NOTE: when I brought the audio back online, I could hear most of the clips again. MOST of them. But there were quite a few that remained unheard. I checked to make sure the clips, proxies, originals, sync all were fine. They were.
I cleared all the caches I could think of just in case. No help.
Restarted Resolve. No help. Quit Resolve and took the media offline for the night.

This morning I plugged in my external drive again, opened Resolve, and all the audio was playing. I dunno what fixed it but sure sounds like a bug in deciding where the audio should come from to me.

Does sound buggy. Not sure why proxies embed linked audio rather than original - doesn't seem to make any sense, does it?
