MAJOR SENSOR ISSUES Ursa Mini Pro

PostFri Mar 20, 2020 9:39 pm

Hi Guys, I am at my absolute wits end with my ursa mini pro. Out of nowhere it has suddenly started displaying vertical lines all over my footage. If you record it does in fact burn in those vertical lines to the footage. When it first started happening, we could get rid of it by simply power cycling the camera. Then the sensor would go back to looking beautiful. It will also hold the perfect sensor for as long as the camera is on. Today however we have power cycled it 100 times and to no avail. Has anybody experienced these lines before? And is there anything we can do or is the sensor just suddenly toast? Note the supplied image is with the lenscap on.

HOLY MOLY!! Literally after I type that I get it to fire. TWICE It came up with now issues, but now I'm back right where I was with lines. WHAT IS GOING ON!?!?! Doesn't that prove that the sensor is fine and its just some weird software issue?

What ISO is the shot with the lens cap on? What ISOs are getting vertical lines with the lens cap off for your actual takes? Posting a couple of pictures with the lens cap off might help see what’s happening. Been a shot with the lens cap on and the slowest ISO might give a better image but who cares, eh?

Have you properly calibrated your camera with the lens cap on after the sensor has had time to stabilize, say ten minutes after turning the camera on?

It’s necessary to calibrate the sensor when you’re shooting in different conditions such as outdoors in winter versus indoors in the studio. And usually you should calibrate the lens every few months regardless. And with every time you change mounts assuming that’s not a frequent occurrence.

I'd be getting in touch with BMD support for this. It's not normal or expected behavior.

Hi guys, thank you for responding. The vertical lines appear at all ISOs including faintly at 200 and the color blurs in the highlights purple which is the problem. But here is the insane thing, mere moments after I created the post I reset the firmware to 4.3 the original, did a recalibration and then a camera settings rest and everything was working again! The sensor showing perfectly. I am attaching an example of the fringing as well as the fixed image mere minutes later. After I power cycled again it went back to the fringing image. That leads me to believe this is NOT a hardware issues but somehow some garbage software has gotten into the camera?

It's very very strange.

Here is the camera functioning properly mere MINUTES later after resetting the firmware, calibrating the lens, and resetting. But as always, after a power cycle the camera is back to its purple fringing and lines.

It’s hardware.

Go back the BMD.

Frustrating but you can’t live with that. Have you sent samples to BMD Support?

Has anyone found a resolution to this.

I was working today, in a dark room but with plenty of light for the subject. I moved the camera and when I powered back up this. I quickly ran the card over to see if it was a monitoring issue and it is burnt in. Is a first Generation Pro 4.6K with updated firmware.

This is bad. On powering down sometimes it would work for about 20seconds to a minute before it returned but essentially this is a write off at present. Tried recalibrating the sensor, no effect, did a factory reset. Nothing apart for losing the mic inputs set up for the shoot. DOH.

As you can see the camera is pretty much a doorstop. Has anyone ever succeeded in getting anything repaired by blackmagic yet?

I have the same issue and it seems to be getting worse. I think it must be a power issue as I have been having start up problems with the camera as well.

I have been using my cameras Ursa, Ursa mini pro and bmpcc 4k as a 3 camera rig. Last week the Ursa Mini Pro EF turned off and on and then started recording Vertical lives down the image. I reset the camera, re calibrated the settings, turned off and on and the lines remained. The shoot got by on 2 cameras. I tested the camera the following day and the issue seemed to have resolved. However the shoot after. I had difficulties turning the camera on. It required all power be removed and then turned on. However the vertical lines were gone. But it flickered on the image for a few seconds after. It is dark in the attached shot however this does happen in well lit rooms. I am used to BM noise and this is not the problem in this case.

The day after however after shutting down and moving the camera the camera would not restart after a battery change.

I would love some help with this issue. Has anyone managed to find a solution to the problem at all.

You need to send the camera to BMD for repair / assessment. That's the solution.

Hello, I am having a similar issue. Did you ever fix this problem? If you did, what exactly did you do?

This is a known problem caused by the decoupling of the sensor from the sensor board. The heatsink and the Peltier module, pushes the sensor too much, the solution is to open the camera and re-solder all the connections around the entire sensor. If you good with solder, and have the time and mind to memorize where each peace goes , maybe you can fix it .
