Karl I think that's the point of the discussion - it isn't possible at the moment
Lot of people seem to be against it because of the mess/confusion if may cause.
For those who said "no" - If it's not a feature you'd use then it shouldn't be a problem, there could be tick boxes for each track with, untick what you don't want to see, with a master tick box on the top for "show hidden tracks". If you didn't want to use it/get confused you could just make sure this was "show hidden tracks" before you start working.
Maybe even something in the preferences to "allow hiding of tracks" which you could turn permanently off if you thought it would cause an issue.
I understand the folder structure suggestions, Walters 16 tracks into just 1 folder would be a game changer for him. But I'm currently editing on a vertical project, on a laptop, with a locked audio music tracks and a couple of video tracks. Screen real estate is already a problem. Hiding the audio track would be great.
