Unsupported GPU Processing Mode-Linux

PostThu Mar 30, 2023 9:33 pm

When I attempt to open DaVinci Resolve 18 I get an Unsupported GPU Processing Mode message. Next when I attempt to update the configuration DaVinci does not show any GPU for my computer. I am running Linux Mint 21 on a newly purchased Vipr Tech gaming computer. Am I correct in assuming that I need to update my GPU driver in order for DaVinci Resolve to work? If so which driver? Will it work with the Linux OS I have on my computer? Attached is a jpg image of my computer specs.

What is the exact model of the GPU in that system?

It doesn't say exactly what GPU you have, but you will need one that is supported by the amdgpu-pro binary drivers rather than the amdgpu open-source ones. You'll also need to make sure you have the correct opencl libraries installed.

It's a lot less hassle to use NVidia.

Open the side panel and make sure you actually have a GPU.

That screenshot looks like you only have integrate graphics, which is not supported by Resolve in Linux.

That's not the GPU, that's your motherboard model number.

It looks like you don't have an NVIDIA or AMD GPU then, and that means Resolve is not going to work on that system as it sits.

The good news is, you can add an NVIDIA or AMD GPU to that motherboard, and then it could work.

If you want to pursue that, an NVIDIA GPU is generally easier to configure for Resolve on a Linux system, than an AMD GPU.

I have the same issue after just now upgrading from DaVinci Resolve Studio 17 to 18.1.4. I'm running Ubuntu 23.04 with a NVIDIA GeForce RTX™ 2060 GPU. There is no option to choose a GPU in the UI.

In the Applications menu, you should see an app called DaVinci Resolve Capture Logs. It will have a gear icon. Run that and provide the file it creates on your desktop.

Good afternoon all:
I am trying to test Davinci Resolve Software on my Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS

I am using an ASUS:
ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. Zenbook UP6502ZD_Q539ZD
Processor:
12th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-12700H × 20
Graphics:
Mesa Intel® Graphics (ADL GT2)

I followed all installations steps, upgraded libraries and still having the same issue since I installed the software.
The message is showing Unsupported GPU Processing Mode.

Reading some POSTS here is saying that I have to open Davinci Resolve Capture Logs. I can see the application in my aaplications but is not open it.
Also, once I open the software Davinci Resolve the window showing the message Unsupported GPU Processing Mode has 2 buttons. One says quit and the other button says update configuration.
Once I open update configuration inside Memory and GPU Configuration is not showing any GPU.

I will appreciate any assistance on this matter.

Thank you, Rafael.

This is an integrated GPU. Resolve on Linux requires a discrete GPU.

Buy a different laptop or run windows.

I've run into similar issue. This is a desktop machine running up to date Manjaro using an NVidia GeForce 3090 Ti video card. Using current, and update to date, 6.1 kernel and nvidia driver v.535.113.01

When Resolve starts I run into the "Unsupported GPU Processing Mode" error. I select "Update Configuration", but under "Memory and GPU" it doesn't seem to see my video card. This is the only video card in the system, and the nVidia drivers are the only video drivers installed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Hi. I am in the same boat as others. I had resolve working on this computer for years when running Ubuntu Studio 20.04 and 22.04. I am now running MXLinux MX21. I think it only sees device 1 (intel) and not device 2(nvidia).

************************************NVidia Graphics Card Info***********************************
NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 525.125.06 Tue May 30 05:11:37 UTC 2023
GCC version: gcc version 10.2.1 20210110 (Debian 10.2.1-6)
Model: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super with Max-Q Design
IRQ: 197
GPU UUID: GPU-3dc39cad-fb79-8830-6777-41d97cf12e34

Bus Type: PCIe
DMA Size: 47 bits
DMA Mask: 0x7fffffffffff
Bus Location: 0000:01:00.0
Device Minor: 0
GPU Excluded: No

***DONE***

But the resolve 18.6 studio doesn't show anything at all to select. No CUDA and no OPEN_GL.

Within the attachment, I have added my sysinfo. Hope it helps.

@canezila You're on a laptop right ? Did you run with prime-run or whatever equivalent to make sure the dGPU is used ?

On 10-15 at 02:02, the oldest Resolve log shows this:

So at that time it was properly detecting the OS and the GPU. But something on the system changed shortly after that time, and the OS and GPU were no longer detected in all the subsequent logs.

Any idea what you might have changed on the system between 02:02 and 02:09?

I'm seeing this too. We're all running unsupported OS revisions here. I've got an ancient Ubutu 20.04 I keep running because it and Resolve 17.2 keep working and later versions don't.

I'm running a VEGA card, so that explains a whole lot. But I also have an NVIDIA RTX 3060 running headless and I'd hoped Resolve 18.6 could use that for compute and the VEGA card just to display. That has not worked out well at all. So I'm back to 17.2 which does actually work.

Kindof considering running the supported CENTOS release in a virtual container and passing through the RTX card. Could even run Windows there, I guess.

Resolve is now a must have for clients so I'm considering such radical options as Windows. lol

So after running into the issue with libpango, and having to get rid of a bunch of the shipped libraries:
Code: Select all
libgio-2.0.so* libglib-2.0.so* libgmodule-2.0.so* libgobject-2.0.so*

... I ended up with the same "Unsupported GPU Processing Mode" -dialog, and the settings not showing any options. I have a perfectly fine Nvidia GPU that I know to work with Davinci Resolve, so looked more like a software side issue again.

Turns out as typical, software on Linux is really bad at explaining what is wrong. I had to install "opencl-nvidia" package from my package manager. If you're not using Arch, it's possibly called something else but likely with a combination of "opencl" and "nvidia" in the name.

Hello,
I also have exactly this problem.

I'm using debian 12 stable and the debian nvidia drivers.
They are active, they work, nvidia-smi confirms they are used.

DR installation works as in the instruction - like a charm
Unfortunately at startup I get the GPUDetect error.

Thank you for your reply. I have nowhere found any information an driver numbers yet.

I uninstalled the 19 beta and installed the latest 18 final.
-> but the same error

I could use Windows but I do not do anything else with it.
And because of the Studio licence I would like to take advantage of GPU acceleration of course.

Mmm, ok. Make sure you have the nvidia opencl drivers installed too. I know on ubuntu it was in a separate package.

Even if Resolve doesn't use OpenCL for nvidia (it uses cuda), it uses it to detect GPUs ...

I installed some more opencl and cuda related meta packages.
Everything from the official debain repo

Now clinfo -l gives a proper output and Resolve is starting.

Great so far !!

So I have to uninstall and install the studio version, right?

No, you can install the Studio version over top of the free version on Linux and Mac.

On Windows, you can install a newer Studio version over an older free version. But if the free version is the same, it has to be uninstalled first.

Thank you for clarifying this.

I'm not sure exactly which package was needed but I can tell the meta-package name:

"nvidia-driver-full" contains:
libcudadebugger1 libnvidia-api1 libnvidia-fbc1 libnvidia-ngx1 libnvidia-nvvm4 libnvidia-opticalflow1 libnvoptix1 nvidia-cuda-mps nvidia-opencl-common nvidia-opencl-icd nvidia-powerd

[FIXED] Re: Unsupported GPU Processing Mode-Linux

PostSat Sep 07, 2024 8:54 pm

I have a Samsung Galaxybook 2. This has an i7 with an integrated GPU (Mesa Intel(R) Graphics - ADL GT2).

Edit 2: Fixed
I got this working. Warning, it was a pain in the butt:
- Updated linux mint to 22 Wilma
- Installed the oibaf graphics drivers ppa in order to get Mesa 24.1+ https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ubuntu/graphics-drivers
- Compiled and installed https://github.com/intel/compute-runtime
-----> I used the https://github.com/smunaut/compute-runtime/tree/fix-arc branch, I don't think this was actually necessary for my card
-----> There are a ton of annoying dependencies. Notably intel-graphics-compiler is the worst. Try following these instructions: https://github.com/intel/intel-graphics ... _ubuntu.md with some creativity and grit.

BUT... IT WORKS! Hooray. 1920x1080 editing seems pretty smooth so far. Rendering looks good.

***
Initial post:

I got the same error. I assume Resolve is looking for opencl on start-up. Despite this being an integrated GPU, it supports opencl. I was able to run Resolve on Linux Mint by installing the intel opencl loader:

Code: Select all
sudo apt install intel-opencl-icd

Edit: not fully working after all. I am able to run the program and, after installing the latest experimental intel drivers (24.31.30508.7 - follow https://github.com/intel/compute-runtime/releases), I can see media thumbnails and timeline thumbnails, but the preview window is black and I continually get a "your GPU memory is full", even when showing still images on a 720 timeline with 1/4 resolution previews. I guess it's the preview rendering pipeline that isn't even working with intel. Looks like the opengl context isn't making it to opencl compute or vice-versa, not actually a memory problem. No preview == not really useable.

I have exactly the same issue on my laptop albeit having different specs. (see attachment)
I tried your fix, but unfortunately it did not work. Should it work for my setup after all, or am I doing something wrong?

Help is greatly appreciated :)

Resolve on Linux does not support Intel GPUs. Apparently Emile has found a solution that works around that.

But in your case, you have an NVIDIA GPU. So that CAN work, if you get a proper NVIDIA driver installed. The default open source Nouveau NVIDIA driver will not work with Resolve.

If you could provide a Resolve diagnostics log file, that could be helpful. In your Apps menu, you should have a "DaVinci Resolve Capture Logs" app, which has a gear icon. You can generate the Resolve diagnostics log with that.

I did not find the app you asked for but when I right clicked the Davinci Resolve app I got the option to launch it with the dedicated GPU and that seems to have done the trick.

So thank you for pointing me in the right direction :)

Hello All!
I Had this issue, did so many things, reading this allowed me to resolve.

First of all I Installed nvidia-drivers, the GPU appeared but Grayed out, reinstalled several times no luck.
Sometimes did not show at all.

Finally I was able to make the GPU available by installing nvidia-drivers-full
FIRST UNINSTALL nvidia-driver

Code: Select all
sudo apt remove nvidia-driver

Then Install the full
Code: Select all
sudo apt install nvidia-driver-full

This seemed to do the trick, I still had the Unsupported GPU Processing Mode pop up, but went to configuration and deselected the options:
GPU Processing Mode
GPU Selection

Was able to select the NVIDIA Card, and VOILA!

It worked!

My SPECS:
Host: HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop 15-ec2xxx
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600H with Radeon Graphics (12)
OS: Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm) x86_64
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650
NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 535.247.01

OpenCL mode does not properly work with NVIDIA GPUs. Selecting that may allow Resolve to launch, but GPU operations will be crippled. CUDA must be used with NVIDIA GPU's for proper Resolve operation.
