New Camera and Mount Upcoming ?

There doesn’t seem to be any more excitement with BMD cinema cameras. Broadcast doesn’t interest me at all. Unfortunately, that all I hear from BMD. Hopefully another BMD like company is on the horizon for low cost and well design Cinema cameras, without the issues we all had encountered before.

I just hope they don't double down on the pocket range and forget about us Ursa mini guys & gals.

Still no major regrets despite the 6K Pro arriving last week.

I doubt whatever is announced on the 14th would ship to me in time for the shoot I needed it for anyway.

I just did two really big projects on the 12k and the clients keep saying how much they love the image.
I’m out on a multi-day commercial shoot with it now and I’m still amazing at the dynamic range and color I can get out of it!

Apple just announced the iPhone 15, nothing new really except the USB C.

Would be pretty sweet if Apple and BMD would have worked out a solution where iPhone could use BMD camera as its own, and BMD camera could use iPhone as monitor...

Well the new iPhone 15 Pro supports ACES and will record "log" for enhanced color grading in post. That's a nice improvement.

I'd love for Apple to get rid of ProRes RAW or work with Blackmagic to get support for it in Resolve. Otherwise, get rid of it and switch to BRAW.

What also seems nice is direct recording to an external device over USB-C. No need for huge and very expensive internal storage. If it's true. Nofilmschool thinks so.

I second the call for supporting ProRes RAW in DR, it's about time.

My iPhone 14 Pro has a terabyte of storage but I really like the new support for ACES on a phone and the ability to have log recording. When I shoot stills I’ve been shooting hundreds of 48GB raw photos and that adds up in a hurry even with a terabyte v

But now you can unload it much faster.

Horses for courses. There are situations where I don't use our UMP 4.6K G1 and not even a Sony A7IV.

I admit that some of those 'filmmaker' features are sheer marketing and that I'm as curious as everybody else what BM is bringing to the show.

Has the iPhone with tiny sensor, tiny lenses and heavy processing really come a tool worth having all the advanced storage stuff consuming huge space? .

Phones have already replaced point and shoot cameras for most of the general population. It's happening now with video as well.

I can imagine that for journalists phones will be plenty good enough for remote and difficult work in hostile environments.

It's natural that phone companies will overlap on this functionality. They've been rapidly improving their cameras and performance.

You might not like the Apple eco-system but I'm sure that there will be other options for shooting and downloading material for the kind of work we do. We're about to see a big leap forward here.

The thing I like about Apple IPhone video is how good its stabilization is. How I wish full on cinema camera can borrow this technology for use (of course in a selective manner).

Just as interesting as direct recording to an external SSD would be the ability to offload video footage offline to that same SSD. A 256 GB iPhone Pro Max should be able to store something like half an hour of 422 ProRes 4K. How nice it would be to back up that footage in the field, delete the footage from the phone and continue shooting all without the SSD attached.

Dunno if Apple will permit this or not.

In regards to the 6K Pro Max I must have shouted 'readout speeds' 1000x times but to no avail! I wonder if we'll get the figures before it hits the shelves? I'm pretty sure rolling shutter is up there on the list for people looking to upgrade.

FWIW, there isn't an ND switch button on the back of the camera. And no mention of built-in ND filters on the product specs page. So, apparently this model doesn't feature built-in ND filters. Built-in OLPF yes (!), but not ND. Cheers.

This new Studio Camera 4K solves that problem as it can record to SSD. It's only $300 than the Micro Cinema camera. I am excited about this one the most.

What are the rolling shutter times?

If it uses the A7iii sensor that everybody else uses (S5 series as well), rolling shutter will be pretty bad at I think 20+ ms

I was going to use it on my Ronin-S.

Yeah 'm going to get one for exactly these reasons. As a frequent solo shooter it will be great on a gimbal, as a static B/C cam and on a motorised slider for B cam interview setups. I don't do any 'live' production at all.

Does anyone know why there was initially a distinction between the micro 'studio' and the micro 'cinema'? Why is this one specified as being a 'studio' camera, and why is there no equivalent 'cinema' version?

There is no Prores and that makes me sad. Full frame was exciting for a minute then I found out it's only RAW, which I use for everything I shoot for myself but when I'm hired out, they all want prores. Also Prores is a great way to change resolutions to 4k, without the crop. I'm just sad now. I want full frame from BM but I think without prores, it just won't work for me.

I think they dropped them for good.
It was not so rare that folks had issues with them get stuck, so rather put them in front of your lens.

Mechanical NDs are here to stay.

They can’t put them into this body design with this short of an FFD.

In some other future design they will show up.

eND still has a lot of issues despite the convenience.

I have been a BM fan boy and loyal user since the square production 4k. I have 2UMPG1,4 UMPG2s, 2P6K, and 1 P4K. I keep them on all gen 4 since the G2 can’t do Gen 5. I just wrapped a 4 month unscripted project for OWN network and had to fight tooth and nail to get them to allow me to use the BM cameras instead of Sony. Specs said I had to use ProRes with. I questions asked. I’m disappointed in the new release today and unfortunately will be leaving the BM family as they have taken a turn that makes my workflow and livelyhood harder. I needed the same formats on a lighter camera… The series starts airing Sept 24 on OWN. Here’s a link to the trailer to see the incredible image we got out of the UMPG2.

The NDs on our UMP 4.6K G1 never let us down.

Demetrius, sorry to hear that. Sadly, I suppose the added workflow of converting BRAW Q0 or 3:1 to ProRes 444 would be unacceptable.

As someone who uses these cameras on corporate and commercial DP jobs, the lack of ProRes is a non-starter. Personally I shoot raw but on many of my own projects but when I'm working for agencies they almost always specify a 10 bit 422 video format.

I don’t understand the lack of ProRes on these professional cinema cameras, I had thought when ProRes was not included with the UMP12K that there was a technical reason such as a physical limitation with processor chip memory capacity or incompatibility with their existing ProRes routines and the RGBWWW 6x6 pixels. But when you’re designing a replacement for the Pocket cameras which Grant described as being totally redone for the BMCC6K, surely those limitations shouldn’t be relevant.

Is ProRes being dropped as an economy to avoid licensing royalties?

This was true in September but an October update has removed the 12bit ProRes option. Now best option is 10bit ProRes 422 HQ. Still decent, but a shame.

That's because it's just a front-end to Apple's camera API with all its shortcomings such as heavy noise reduction, flickering, spatial tone-mapping, oversharpening, variable frame rates etc.

They never have. They have always randomly sometimes but not always altered the camera frame rate. No one knows why. Sometimes it’s a .02 fps difference. And the next take it won’t be.

They need to take out their built in tone mapping and make it so you can lock the frame rate. It’s on Apple.

Not just that.

The bigger issue is colour purity. You're basically using polarised light to attenuate how much is going in. It's like shooting through an LCD laptop screen that is being dimmed up and down....

Can you think of another filter that uses polarized light for attenuation?

And anyone who knows ND filters know how destructive variable ND is to an image.

eND is very similar.

There's a reason that the Venice 2 does NOT have eND even though it's clearly been available for some time.

Now a lot of people don't care and prefer the convenience of eND and that's fine too.

But if you're being an imaging purist...eND still isn't there yet.

While I agree about the eND issues, the first statement is simply not true. DJI ronin 4d has single stop mechanical nd filters 1-8 stops with a shorter flange and a much smaller body where the sensor is. It is definitely possible because it already exists in the market.

In *THIS* body shape it is true. They would have to come up with a new platform and designed dit with the ND in mind.

Of course anything is possible, but they are trying to hit a price and feature set in a familiar shape that means all the existing accessories work.

It doesn’t mean we won’t see it in the future but it will likely be some whole new design.
