And then there is Red's Motion Mount, which also has its own issues.

It’s the same thing. Red Motion is an eND on the front of the lens instead of behind it.

They all have similar issues. The PV one has been out for a few years. I’ve never heard of anyone using them. I wonder why?

One problem with it that I think many Sony shooters do not seem to realize is the amount of IR that eND lets through, even on expensive models like the Sony Burano.

Not just that.

The bigger issue is colour purity. You're basically using polarised light to attenuate how much is going in. It's like shooting through an LCD laptop screen that is being dimmed up and down....

Can you think of another filter that uses polarized light for attenuation?

Variable ND!

And anyone who knows ND filters know how destructive variable ND is to an image.

eND is very similar.

There's a reason that the Venice 2 does NOT have eND even though it's clearly been available for some time.

Now a lot of people don't care and prefer the convenience of eND and that's fine too.

But if you're being an imaging purist...eND still isn't there yet.

Thanks for the information, JB! It's the first time I hear about color realted problems with eNDs (haven't used one myself, yet) so I am very curious.

Do you have some links/sources for us, which show the Sony eND's and the PV LCND's color shifts?
I saw some marketing / reviewer generated footage of the FX's eNDs and couldn't see shifts, whereas when you look at classic VNDs the shifts are obvious and strong. Assuming there is a visible shift in the eNDs, would you say its at least a big step up compared to VNDs?
Do you know of any official statements from Sony about the reasons why they did not use their eND in the Venice? I read the F&DTimes articles and I can't recall any statement in regards to that topic.

Thanks in advance!

Not using it in the Venice and being silent about it is speaking out very loud, actually.
Until now, it's only in amateur cameras, while the Venice is their flagship.

I REALLY suspect there will be one more camera announcement this year.
I hope it includes manual NDs (Ursa Mini Pro) and not the electronic NDs on the 6k Pro, in whatever body style they come up with. The Pocket/Cinema 6k is really handy for certain work, but I’d love to see the next body design be something even better!

Adam, until then, the drop-in rear ND filter option for the NiSi Athena L-mount primes may be a very convenient option for the BMCC6K.

I'm hoping for a new upgraded URSA Mini Pro Design with the VistaVision sensor, but with higher frame rates and faster sensor readout. Of course CFExpress for the media. We'll have to see if it is announced before the end of the year. Internal ND is a must, and I do like the manual ND over Electronic.

One thing I'd love is if they do release an URSA Micro type of camera that they embrace the Micro SDI that they use in the 5" Video Assist Monitors. I think that would be very beneficial to keeping a professional video out port and keeping to a smaller size. I would also embrace 5-Pin Lemo for Timecode, which will keep the Timecode Port small as well. Honestly, I don't think a Micro would need XLR or even the Mini-XLR ports. I don't see a reason to record audio on the Micro other than the built-in mic for scratch audio. Let the Mini be the camera with XLR and keep the Micro for that smaller imaging device. High quality audio can be recorded externally, and with Timecode Syncing it's a breeze.

Wireless Video integration with Wireless Lens Control is very important these days. So I hope they develop their future professional line cameras with that in mind.

I think it’s time to invest in some Mamiya Sekor glass…

That's all I use on my Pocket 6k.

Shhh, don't discuss that in public, I'm on the hunt myself ;-)
