Power options for Production 4k

PostFri Nov 17, 2023 12:58 am

Hey folks,
attempted to do some backlog searching on power options for my (new to me) Black Magic Production 4k and due to the age of some of those threads links to direct products were either broken or dead. Coming from the Sony mirrorless world things were pretty straightforward when it came to batteries so this has been a whole learning experience for me.

The camera was purchased with 2 of these plates:

and 1 of these batteries:

Eventually when everything arrived, the battery wasn't charging in the supplied Kastar charger and after purchasing a new charger I came to the conclusion that the culprit was the battery.

Before I go ahead and purchase another replacement battery and I end up back in this scenario, is there a different, more cost efficient route to go? I saw some folks were running BMCCs off of powerbanks but I wouldn't even know where to start or if that's possible for the 4k.

I did see NPF batteries held some sort of concern because of voltage but this Kastar battery is rated for 14.4v so I'm assuming just 1 of these would be good enough?

I know v mount batteries are the creme de la creme but I got this camera for a reasonable good price and sinking any more money into it even will eat into that deal.

Also what is a viable dc adapter to charge the internal battery? Everything I look up directs me to the 2 pin pocket adapter, which oddly enough was sent with the camera accidently instead of a barrel charger.

Any Advice?

If you talk about an silver block called production camera 4k I had it for a couple of years, I had a portable battery that output 12v and later I bought a plate with a couple of gmount battery of 95w.
Dc in support from 11 to 20v and allow you to use many different kind of battery. Is important that is a constant energy.
What is you main use of this camera? Recording ProRes or raw cdng?

I wish I could even answer the question of main use, ideally it was to going to be my foray into using a dedicated cinema cam for any and everything. But not having a suitable battery option atm is leaving me flummoxed.

You can use power tool batteries. For me it was a cheap solution as I already had four of them.

All you need is an adapter and a 2.5x5.5 dc plug for the bmpc 4K
It can be as simple as this one

On my ursa mini 4.6k I use an adapter in combination with this plate
