Multiple frame guides at same time?

PostSat Jun 08, 2024 7:15 pm

Hi,

is there any way to have multiple frame guides at the same time?

Say I was shooting 16:9 but also wanted 1:1 and 9:16 guides - is that possible?

I hired out my camera the other day and it was something they asked about - I could only see one way of doing it, and any other guides like safe frames or rules of thirds act only within the visible frame guide?

Thanks,

Steve

Not yet. The shooting resolution gives you a display of your active area, so that’s 16:9 taken care of. Then you can add a real frame guide selected from the available options such as 1:1. If you can’t make the safe area represent the third frame, the other option is taping a white thread over your monitor ‘masking’ where the 9:16 guide would fall. Adding an additional frame guide should be somewhat easy to do within the bounds of the active area, so I can see that being added. However you know as soon as that feature is released, people will ask for any number of selected frame guides.

Shooting 16:9 and delivering a 9:16 cut in post is easy and probably the best place to do it so you can fine tune the physical position of the vertical image within that cramped area. Composing 9:6 in a monitor as a shooter or director while recording 16:9 isn’t seriously likely to give you the best results unless you’re in a totally controlled shoot with no penalty for lots of retakes in my opinion.

Hi Rick,

thanks - yeah it's not something I've ever needed personally, but will pass it along to them.

Cheers!

Just to add what Rick said already, I would do it his way, and likely be something like this.

As a shooter, I would use a frame guide (be it one that is in camera or masks the monitor) to compose the shot I want it for that frame ratio. The camera will record it as 16:9 but that’s fine.

In post, I can size or frame the shots by setting the size I want the clip to be or through overlays (or output blanking) to the frame size I want that shot to be delivered. It’s pretty easy to do.

Just as a postscript, I don’t like to use overlays or what Resolve has call output blanking unless I am in a rush and the project is not very particular. What I prefer doing is for those clips that needs to be reframed with a different frame size, I would do them individually and separately, and then assemble them with the other clips in a master timeline. This way I maintain everything in the correct aspect ratio. Wes Anderson movies are known to do this a lot.
