more digits after the decimal point (set via preferences)

PostThu Aug 08, 2024 1:43 am

currently, davinci and fusion is using mostly 3 decimal points for coordinates (0-1). this means that DR/Fusion has a resolution of 4px when using a 4k project.

footage and projects get more resolution, and the same 3 decimal points will allow the user to place an item only with 12px precision in a 12k project.

request:
1. increase the precision visible to the user to 4 decimal points
2. create a preference field where the user can choose 3, 4 or 5 decimal points visible throughout everything

+1!

Fusion normally exposes units with normalized 0-1 coordinates which can get a bit fidgety when tweaking the final digits of precision if you are dealing with very high resolution media.

When the BMD URSA Cine Immersive camera ships, this existing numerical precision control thing will become even more important with a dual 8K per eye (16-17K SBS) stereoscopic 3D framesize. Heaven help anyone who then stitches multiple views of this URSA BRAW media into either cylindrical, or spherical 360 degree stereo content for ultra-highend virtual production and fulldome needs...

Having a float/double precision control is something I would find extremely useful to have as an option in both the Resolve advanced settings, and in Fusion's "Globals and Default Settings", too. This would help DCTL Lut, Fuse, Effects Templates, and Macro creators/users.

I found something of interest in the BMD "Fusion 18 Fuse Manual.pdf" guide on page 48:

IC_DisplayedPrecision defines how many floating point digits are displayed for controls (e.g. sliders). A value of 2, for example, would display a value of 0.523203 as 0.52, even though the precise value is still used internally (and returned if the input is queried). Print will also return .52.

In DaVinci Resolve I occasional
just type in values with more than three places after the decimal. I know it’s only going to display the value with a precision of three places, but I assume internally it makes a difference. An example would be in the Edit page when I enter a value for the transform of anamorphic footage to fit my deliverable resolution. To squeeze the Y-axis for a 1.33x anamorphic, the exact value would be about 1.7518797… but Resolve displays 1.752 as I recall.

Perhaps that’s the definition of being an optimist—blind faith that things will be better than they appear to be!

Trying to match a long 23.976 GoPro video to some from Sony cameras, and those are not the same 23.976

Retiming would be less annoying than having to drop frames by hand

Edit: typing in numbers past the digits on screen does work as suggested, though you can't see them. For reference, setting the GoPro speed to 100.0035 matches them pretty closely - at least up to 3h
