IP2110 from BMD versus the rest of the world

PostMon Sep 16, 2024 9:02 pm

Hello,

Is the BMD IP 2110 hardware interoperable with other manufacturers like Sony?

Formats up to 1080p60 should be fine. I haven't tried with sony, but have had success with deltacast cards.
4k formats are unlikely to work as Blackmagic is using a custom codec

I don't think the BMD ST.2110 equipment supports redundant paths (using ST.2022-7?) that many broadcast installations use - so that may be an issue. (This is where multicast sources generate dual ST.2110 streams to be carried via dual network paths for resilience - so if you lose one network path, multicast subscribers seamlessly switch to the other).

When I was chatting to a couple of engineers who support dual path ST.2110 installations they said this was kind of a deal-breaker for using BMD stuff as gateways to and from SDI.

proprietary codec... :(

Some companies rent UHC 8300 locally for football or others events. Use of ST2082-12 or IP2110. I was wondering if it was possible to connect them to a blackmagic workflow ?

SMPTE 2110 encompasses a suite of protocols, not all elements are supported by all devices. The core functionality should be compatible. There are no proprietary (non-2110) elements within the suite otherwise it wouldn't be 2110. The Studio cams and converters use a proprietary IP protocol but they're not 2110.

Good Luck

Are you using the UHC-8300 8K camera for cut-out replays in UHD or HD, or for native 8K?

The 8K IP output is Sony's older NMI IP system over 40GbE QSFP+ connectors, or the 8K ST.2110 over 100GbE QSFP28, which BMD stuff isn't compatible with, and the non-IP 8K output is via Quad UHD (i.e. 4x12G-SDI feeds for 7680x4320/50-59.94p or 8x12G-SDI for 100-119.88p for HFR slow mo? The latter would be the route for a Constellation 8K to work 8K native with that camera I guess...

The UHD 2110 cut-out will be >10GbE as it will be uncompressed - so won't be compatible with BMD 2110 stuff which is proprietarily compressed.

I don't have experience of using it - I think it has two distinct markets - 8K native production (mainly in Japan) and 8k-acquisition for punch-in replays in UHD or HD. I don't know how the punch-in replays work in terms of UHD and HD output - but I guess they present as 12G-SDI and 3G/HD-SDI?

Also note it's not a 2/3" camera like other Sony system cameras - it's 1.25" using ARIB TR-B37 lens mount.

However I suspect the key use for this camera is for UHD punch-out replays - I don't know what the ecosystem required for that is.

Worth noting that the compressed codec is only used on 2160p 59.94 and 60 12G formats.

All other formats up to and including 2160p 50 are uncompressed. It's just the 2160p59.94 and 60 formats that are compressed to get the 12G signal down under 10G.

Thanks for all contributions.

Incorporating IP2110 hardware in my workflow was the underlying question.

@Tim Schumann : Thanks Tim for this important info as we use 50p localy. As complementary information, are all color precision supported (4:2:2...) or limited ?

At that time, without a leading camera like ursa broadcast in IP2110 edition, I'm not in a hurry...

@stephen_neal : correctly guessed. Sony was used mainly for replay and sometimes as 8K for testing during big events (Tennis...). If sony can be connected to constellation 8K through SDI, it's a good news.
Sorry that BMD issue 8K and more cameras without 8K SDI outputs... May be one day ;)

Thanks for confirming that - I was aware 2160p50 squeaked into 10GbE (some of my colleagues running UHD IP trucks in the UK mentioned it) I wasn't aware that BMD stayed uncompressed for 2160p50 and only switched to the proprietary compression for 2160p59.94 though.

Is any BMD stuff supporting "seamless protection switching" with ST.2110 (I think ST.2022-7 defines the standards used for this?)
