New keyframe panel have issues (YT video)

PostTue Apr 15, 2025 2:09 am

I initially said the keyframe panel was so great that it should replace the one in fusion, but it was after just watching the presentation and now i watched this video and made me realised the new Keyframe panel has flaws and also the keyframe thing that appears below the clip it should add the speed ramping capablities too, it's 17 min video, but at 2x it's ok, makes a lot of great points that hopefully Blackmagic fixes, the thumbnail on the forum makes it look as if the video is deleted, but that just the forum, the video is up and from today

There is also problem with position keyframes, when you smoothing keyframes the footage starts moving with cuts from one to other keyframe not smoothly.

+1

I'm hopeful that this new keyframe panel feature will continue to evolve throughout the beta.

To add some context from the video and general speed ramping changes the community has asked for before.

See here:

here:
viewtopic.php?f=33&t=212840&p=1106865&hilit=speed+ramp#p1106865
And here:

A LOT of these asks have been resolved in this new version. But fundamentally we can not do start and stop keyframes for speed ramping like Fusion does on the time stretcher node and spline tool. Its a great start, but can go so much farther.

That's my video! I really hope that BMD can look at implementing the new features asked for.

I have used and made an entire tutorial on how the timestretcher node works, and alot of people have commented saying that it is the solution.

The time stretcher is great, but it's not the solution. The time stretcher operates on a frame bases. For example, if I want to speed ramp just the end of a clip, I have to first check the starting frame, set the frame, then when I want the speed ramp to start, input the appropriate frame so that everything before plays a 24 fps, then after 20+ frames later I can change the playing frame to a much higher value. This is doable, however when you are working with boomerangs, or reverse, or multiple speedramps, it turns into a lot of math to figure out every single time haha.

Hoping to get the concept asked for implemented in some way in future versions of Resolve!

Another odd issue I found in the keyframe panel - the timeline wouldn't scroll far enough and show all the keyframes. Had to set easing blind.

Nice! I found that video on youtube and hadn't seen it was posted here. I replied on the video a few days ago, and I'll post my reply here as well...

I love most of the ideas, however, there are a couple things I think could be implemented better if Resolve completely abandons their old ways instead of trying to hang onto them.

First, I do not like the old method of having speed ramping attached to each clip underneath. I think a better method would be to have the new lower timeline keyframe editor be able to switch to spline editing (just like the upper left panel) because the lower editor is synced to the timeline, so you'd have exactly the same result. Everything will still be lined up with the clips and you wouldn't be taking up real estate in between your tracks on the timeline. In addition, this would open up the ability to select multiple clips and have all of their curves accessible inside of the editor. You could select points across different clips and edit them together at the same time instead of having to edit each clip individually. I'm still working on my (rather large lol) suggestion list for the keyframe/spline editors that I'll be posting on the official Resolve forum and this is one of my suggestions.

If they adopt the two point method (which I think they should), I don't think it'd be a good idea to keep the old legacy Retime Controls around. I don't think the single point and two point systems are compatible. If you've made a curve using the two point method, what would the Retime Controls look like? I don't think it makes sense to keep it. However, they could replicate the functionality of the old Speed Points by adding a vertical line with a control point at the top and bottom, then grab the vertical line to move both the top and bottom points together at once. This would behave exactly like the old Speed Points but still be compatible with having two points. Currently, you can grab the line between points but it only moves up and down. The curves should also allow for left/right movement with modifiers to lock it in a particular direction. I'd say the default with no modifiers should lock to the horizontal access so timing can be changed easily without changing value. Then add a modifier to move vertically (change value only) and another modifier to freely move in any direction. To remove the curve between points and go back to a "Speed Point" without a curve, select the curve and have a button to put it back to a vertical line (with the two points on top and bottom). Finally, when the line is vertical then the two points should appear as a single keyframe in the keyframe editor so that both points move together. When they are separated, then they should show up as two separate keyframes which can be moved separately.
