How to Sync multiple video clips with 1 audio clip?

PostSun May 25, 2025 9:39 am

Hi, I have been struggling to do this. Can you help?

I leave my audio recorder recording for the entire session (maybe 30 mins) and I turn my video camera on and off to record individual clips. I end up with one long audio clip and say 15 video clips.

How can I sync these in Davinci Resolve?

well, did you use time sync SMPTE to get the clocks jammed and in sync between camera and audio recorder?
there are two options to do this:
- your devices are capable of jam-sync e.g. the BMPCC4k/6K and the Zoom F6 via TTRS Jack
- you record the SMPTE timecode in separate audio tracks on either device
for both options you will need a timesync generator like the Deity TC-1 or Tentacle Sync.
This is the semi-pro way of doing things, obviously it involves money and know-how...

otherwise you can pray and try syncing via Waveform in resolve...

Thanks Michael for your super fast response.

No I don't have time sync - limited budget here - and I rely on waveform sync which works very well. The limitation with Davinci is that it only seems to sync on a one-to-one basis, ie one audio file to one video file.

Any solutions to do a one to many audio sync using waveforms?

The clapperboard is your friend during filming.

Jose, are you saying that Davinci cannot sync 1 to many as per my question? Plural Eyes has no problem with this type of syncing. I just would prefer to do it within Davinci.

I hope I am mistaken as I cannot begin a new audio file every time I start a new video clip, just so that I can use the Waveform audio sync. Perhaps there is a way to use the Multi-camera sync options or another method?!

Anyone know?

I would say, don't do that. Keep both devices rolling.

Post will just be easier.

n00b here... I am a BIG proponent of just 'LET THEM ROLL' and video all also.

But that wont help you now.

Try this maybe? I do this when I have 8-13 video angles of a performance, and one matrix audio track I want to use.

Put all 15 video clips, and the final audio clip into the media bin.

Select all.

Right click, select 'Create a multicam timeline'.

Sync by sound.

It should put each video clip in synch with your audio clip in a 16 channel multicam timeline.

Then edit away.

-----

BUT MAYBE easier/better.... I have never checked the box "detect clips from same camera" when making a multicam. :?

Lets suppose it 'detects clips from the same camera' and groups them all together in one angle, with appropriate blank spots between. That would be cool.

:geek: :geek: And I just got off my butt and looked in the help section... looks like that might be 'zactly what you need to do. End up with a multicam project with only two angles (video clips, and audio 'angle') :D

Randy’s suggestion is the right answer to your question, I do this myself sometimes. One extra step I take before creating a multicam timeline is assigning the same camera number to each clip's metadata under "Camera #."

When you select all your clips along with the audio file to create the multicam clip, make sure to check the “Detect clips from the same camera” option, as Randy suggested. Then, in the “Detect using” dropdown, select “Metadata - Camera #”

This way, all clips from the same camera will be placed on a single track. If you skip setting the metadata, the clips will still sync, but each one will end up on its own track.

Sync using the media page.

In the media pool on the MEDIA PAGE, select as many video clips that share the same audio, ALONG with the one lone audio clip; right click, and select "autosync audio", then choose your method (waveform or timecode).

No need to use a multi cam clip if not needed, or to create a timeline just to have a place to sync the audio.

I do this all the time.

I have tried using autosync audio in the media page before but nothing seem to happen after the sync process has completed?

WHOA!! I had no idea that such a feature was here. Free version also?

I have OFTEN used 'multicam' feature to sync one video track with another audio clip. Might have been 'using a sledgehammer to drive a finish nail'

I know the multicam feature creates a multicam clip, what does the 'sync' feature create??

But THANK YOU for the help!

It just internally attaches the audio to the clip.

You can verify by investigating the audio section of the clip attributes menu.

Many times, in my workflow, I'll master all dialog audio before I start editing and then sync those new audio files to camera originals, then for the final mastering pass I'm only worried about music levels and effects. For those dialog masters, I'll create a timeline the same length and name of the uncut audio file. And if the master ever needs to be changed, I iterate that timeline, re-render, then "replace file with" in the media page without having to touch any of my syncs.

Sometimes it may seem as if nothing happened, but a way to know is to have the "Synced Audio" column checked on in the Media Page list view. You'll see a file name matching the audio file populate the field if it is indeed synced to something.

Then back on the edit page, make sure to have both "Show File Names" and "Overlay Synced Audio File Names" options checked in the View menu. That way you can visually see the file name of the new synced audio being referenced when working with the clip in the timeline.

The manual has a really good section on how to sync audio in the media page, and it even goes over the procedure of how to create manual syncs when all you have is a visual cue like a clapper board.

In the, "Ingest and Organize Media" Section, there's a chapter called, "Syncing Audio and Video" that's only 7 pages long.

The Media Page is very underrated!

 Honestly... I have yet to use it.

Or the Fusion page. :? Or..... the cut page. Ok, Never used Fairlight either.

I sorta stumble into Edit, throw my stuff in the media pool.

Do my dirty work, then go to color and semi blindly manipulate things until I think it looks better on my wal-mart TV monitor.

Then on to Export to get it made.

I suppose there *might* be a few workflow steps that I am not using in this software, and I dont even know to list.

But, learning. Thanks to GREAT posts like yours. Thank you. Awesome.
