Separate sub-forum for bug reports

PostThu Jun 12, 2025 5:45 am

Why isn't there a separate sub-forum for bug reports? Right now, reporting a bug doesn't really fit in "Davinci Resolve Feature Requests". And posting bug reports in the "Davinci Resolve" general area sees the bug report fighting for attention among the mass of general discussion.

I agree in principle, but the reality is that it's difficult for many people to differentiate if something is a feature request or a genuine "bug" report. Having a separate Bug Reports forum would make things worse, because people who perceive the lack of a feature to be an actual "bug" will post their feature requests in the "Bug Reports" forum instead, which is a totally inappropriate use of a bug-report/issues forum.

Even though I think a phpBB message board is a terrible way to track issues, and wish BMD had a proper issues-tracking system like on Github, I also understand that most normal users are more comfortable using a regular "message board" system, and I trust that BMD has some sort of system figured out on their end to parse through all of the forum posts and separating feature requests from true bug reports.

That said, I do think there needs to be a separate forum for Scripting/API related questions.

Because that's pretty much what the main Resolve forum is for.

+1 IMO the main forum should be much more general Q&A whereas bug reports and feature requests are their own specific beasts.

Based on that logic I think we need a "User Issues" subforum.
So many bug reports are user error or unfamiliarity with resolve so it will still be a mess.
Nice intention but I doubt users will be disciplined enough to post in the appropriate forum.

Only BMD itself (not other forum members) can tell if something is actually a bug, so subforum would be for people to post "I think it is a bug". If it is, it can be acknowledged, if not, also so. It really is that simple.

What you wrote above equally applies to this, many users can't tell api from abc and will post random stuff in there. Then what?

Do you really see similar problems with any of the other subforums here? Are people frequently posting “random” questions about the Resolve Color, Fairlight or Edit pages in the Fusion or Cinematography subforums? I’m not sure if you’re giving users enough credit to realize that a subforum named “Resolve Scripting API” probably isn’t the right forum to be asking a question about how to use the Magic Mask tool.

The case for having a separate Scripting forum is a more of user-centric one. When I’m interested in just browsing scripting-related topics, I could just dip into the specific forum for that instead of trying to parse them out of the general Resolve forum. The audience for such topics is highly specialized, so it makes more sense to keep them separate, because normal Resolve users have zero interest in API/Scripting related topics, and the people who are interested in them want a semblance of a “community” where these highly specialized subjects are discussed without the noise of general Resolve topics.

Quite the opposite, I give them enough credit to warrant a bug reports forum. I don't believe in not doing useful things because some idiot might misuse it.
