I might be crazy but I installed it and there's a 45 shutter angle.. was this available before? Also, peaking seems more noticeable… or am I crazy?

45 degrees has been there before.

Have you discovered any other improvements? What about sound? Black dot?
Thx.

I'm pretty sure the 1.6.1 update is mostly just to add support for the 4K camera that's now shipping. The 'improvements' update is still coming...

This update is to unify all three cameras. I think from now on every new feature will be available for all the cameras. Can't wait!

At least it didn't brick my camera during update...

Other than that: no differences to before, though i have to re-test purple grid yet.

I hope at least the grid pattern or the middle line are gone. Not updating yet 'till Blackmagic Design specifically let know what improvements for the BMCC 2.5K are included or else stuff.

Say Mac Jaeger ¿Did you experienced the "slight flickering on the built-in LCD screen" after the update?

Hoping we get audio meters, fixes for the audio quality (low end missing), and compressed raw for the 2.5k soon. Also, Grant mentioned something about sharper ProRes last year, will we be seeing this soon? Very unspecific notes again. I just wish we could get a tiny bit more communication, even with the update notes.

I've been looking forward to the sharper prores and hopefully compressed lossless raw. Otherwise I don't care about any of the other things people always talk about.

Black Magic has outdone itself in the additions provided for the Black Magic Cinema Camera EF and MFT with this update. As far as I can tell the new number 1.6.1 is tho only thing added. Of course, because its crack staff is doing such a great job of documenting changes, one can't be sure if there is an Easter egg or two provided. Maybe we'll lose midrange sound too this time.

I can't help but wonder what, exactly, is the advantage of packing updates for 3 different cameras into the same download?

- cameras are at different stages of development/testing/debugging
- cameras use different hardware
- cameras are used by different market segments
- cameras are easily distinguished between the 3 models
- however it is hard to tell what each released update does for each particular camera
- if you see a new release, you are inclined to (unnecessarily? hard to tell) update your camera - but BM packs updates for another 2 in it, making it larger and likely MORE bug-prone

...then why the unified firmware update package, to begin with? Wouldn't it make more sense to have individual updates for each camera?

I seriously hope the 2.5k ver2 update will shut everyone up about the lack of things updated. It's getting really old.

It could be just something to do with the way it communicates with lenses or other internal components.

I have this issue with the EF version on my Tamron 70-200mm 2.8 where it will just do this constant jitter as if its trying to change iris and just keeps switching back and forth infinitely. It's not a supported lens currently, so the only way I can fix it is to hit the IRIS button until it stops.

Things like that maybe fixed in this firmware.. who knows..

No different to an OS update for your computer. It includes elements that are for desktops, notebooks, etc.

A unified update is very useful for those of us who have multiple cameras. Means we can run one installer and update all cameras to the same feature set.

I really don't get the "need" for formatting. Sure it would be nice to have but you have to dump your footage so it's really a non issue to format the card while it's connected to the computer. Then it's ready for its next use.

Of way more importance would be a space remaining indicator that would save having to check the elapsed record time and then working out how much might be left.

how difficult is it to just let us know what is going on with the BMCC 2.5k. It is a great camera. Works great.
I truly believe that they wouldn't just piss away a great product but then I did this update....

my screen is flickering.... it was working perfectly before the update... why oh why you keep us (YOUR CUSTOMERS) going through this roller coaster?

I love your camera, your customer service people here in the SF bay are great... but this... in the middle of projects and JOBS...

Honestly this is disappointing.

Why is my screen flickering? how can I go back to 1.5.1?

Now you have learned to not update software in the middle of projects.
That is rule #1 on every workflow, really.

It is common for the screen to flicker after an update, please READ the read me. Or is it something else?

As for getting back to 1.5.1, download the legacy file at the support page.

MArtin, you're a perfect example of whats wrong with whining out in the open. You entangled yourself in a web of your own making. You made yourself look foolish because you want someone to blame for a problem that does not exist. As someone mentioned if you cared to read the read me file FLICKERING IS NORMAL after the 1.6.1 update ON A BMCC. It will go away after several minutes. Blackmagic gave you a heads up to expect this but you just wanted to jump right in and attack. This should be a lesson learned.

Just updated my pocket cam, right before updating I noticed there was a weird strobing effect on the lcd with certain lights when shooting RAW even when I changed the shutter angle, but after updating I tested on the same lights and the strobing was gone... maybe that's just my camera though.

Well hell, if I were perfect I wouldn't care about formatting in-camera, but what if you forget to format the SSD? I generally do not format after I copy, only before a new job. I was on a run/gun job today that was last minute and I forgot to format. I did not need to offload in the field so I didn't have a laptop with me. Because there's no time-remaining, I didn't realize I only had ~10min left on the drive. Luckily I had a second SSD with me, but if I hadn't, I would have been screwed.

Now you're probably going to tell me that it was my fault for forgetting to format. And you'd be right in that I should have done so. But you also have to remember that every single digital camera I've ever owned has had the ability to erase clips or format in the camera. From my old HMC150 to DSLRs to Flip cameras.

I know you couldn't "format" film and the Alexa can't do it, but who cares? This is a $2k camera and the vast majority of people moving to this camera are used to that comfort from previous experience. Not to mention film and the Alexa would be superior if they also had the ability to delete clips in camera.

There, I said it.

and Rev... I think you are what is wrong with todays culture of constant "know it all" assumption.

Besides the point that the camera continues to have the issue after the update, I came to the forum to ask for help and share my grievances which I'm pretty sure that is perfectly fine. (it is call an open forum)

I suggest that you open your mind and get off your bubble, it will do you some good. My team and I love the BMCC and we had hope (like many others) that the greatly delayed firmware upgrade will be here already. Most people are complaining just about that. We have completed many projects already with it and we are pushing for the next batch. We are hoping that our excitement doesn't turn into a permanent disappointment.

If I made a mistake (which I didn't) that does not take away from that disappointment which many of us feel about the lack of information and the missed deadlines regarding the BMCC.

In my heart and based on my conversation with the support team I know they will come through... just hope is sooner than later.

I understand your frustration with this issue, but you need to dig a little deeper and ask why they don't have clip delete on their cameras. A: it's intended to be a digital version of a film cinema camera. As such delete clip wouldn't exist. B: from my understanding the real problem is that deleting clips leaves little bits of the files on the SD card. This prevents the camera from writing to the card fast enough. That's why formatting the card is the recommended way of card management vs simply deleting the clips on your computer. The way I see it BM is performing miracles getting SD cards to write RAW. If the backside of that is having to format on a computer I'm ok with that.

Thank you! I've been saying this since I first joined the forum. Space remaining is the most important update we need for all three cameras. It's really dangerous using them on a professional gig without a meter.

why man, why?
the point was another company long ago was able to develop shooting RAW to solid state media.

do you really want to compare SDXC UHS-I type cards to the CF 300x cards used by red?

just having a little fun.. relax, nobody wants to blemish the pocket cam (which I happily own one of) just sometimes the fanboy rhetoric is...well

do carry on

Writing lossless RAW for sure. All R3D is compressed.

It's compressed losslessly. Which means it's EXACTLY the same as uncompressed.

R3Ds are lossy compression. Once compressed the file is NOT the same as the original.

There's a big difference between those types of compression.

well aware of the type of COMPRESSION in use.. on both cameras

just tying to keep in fun and light hearted..

on a side note, sure missed those compressed bits while watching the Amazing Spider Man...or not

(we get it JB, but not EVERYTHING on here needs to be reduced to an endless pissing contest)

I would have guessed there was a virtually imperceptible difference between those types of raw compression.

The devil is in the detail Marc.

Compression has been a means to an end mainly because we've not had post infrastructure ( or camera media ) that can support uncompressed.

Lossy compression inherently means you loose information that can't be recovered.

Just like the way we know h264 can look great until you actualy want to grade it, so it is in varying degrees with compression. Obviously the less compression the less difference.

So you get marketing speak with phrases like "visually lossless" which are true. Your eyes can't pick it. But it depends on what you're doing with the material.
