what news ???
I really don't get the "need" for formatting. Sure it would be nice to have but you have to dump your footage so it's really a non issue to format the card while it's connected to the computer. Then it's ready for its next use.
Of way more importance would be a space remaining indicator that would save having to check the elapsed record time and then working out how much might be left.
Well hell, if I were perfect I wouldn't care about formatting in-camera, but what if you forget to format the SSD? I generally do not format after I copy, only before a new job. I was on a run/gun job today that was last minute and I forgot to format. I did not need to offload in the field so I didn't have a laptop with me. Because there's no time-remaining, I didn't realize I only had ~10min left on the drive. Luckily I had a second SSD with me, but if I hadn't, I would have been screwed.
Now you're probably going to tell me that it was my fault for forgetting to format. And you'd be right in that I should have done so. But you also have to remember that every single digital camera I've ever owned has had the ability to erase clips or format in the camera. From my old HMC150 to DSLRs to Flip cameras.
I know you couldn't "format" film and the Alexa can't do it, but who cares? This is a $2k camera and the vast majority of people moving to this camera are used to that comfort from previous experience. Not to mention film and the Alexa would be superior if they also had the ability to delete clips in camera.
There, I said it.
