Matching ungraded with graded footage

PostMon May 07, 2018 12:06 pm

Hi everyone,

This might be a novice question, but I want to match an ungraded shot with the graded one from the master to use in a different edit (ungraded shot is longer than the one used in the master). Many frames are exactly the same used in this master.

Is there a way Resolve can automatically match the shots? "Shot match to this clip" won't do it.

Thank you

grab a still of the graded shot
display still wiped with the ungraded shot
open scopes window, display parade & waveform
adjust levels to match the two using scopes to guide your way

Thanks for the reply Shane.

However I was looking if there exists an automated option where Resolve matches those scopes itself. Uber lazy, I know...

I'm using v12.5 btw

Use remote grades to use the same grade everywhere. Select graded clip -> copy local grade to remote. Then select ungraded clip -> use remote grade.

This happens a lot in the movie trailer business, where a final trailer may be composed of color-corrected shots, raw shots, temp dailies shots, and even shots that are not in the final film. I don't know of another way except to turn the knobs until the two shots match.

Any kind of "Auto Match" is not going to work if there's keys, windows, defocus, or any kind of plug-ins used. Even with a straight correction, it may not work if the exposure is radically different. Basically, the job of the colorist is to get a good look from the material and to match shots (along with making the clients happy), so this is something you just have to dig down and learn how to do.

Thanks to everyone for your responses.. Everyone's advice and turning the knobs ended up doing it.
