DaVinci Resolve Public Beta 15 - Super Scale hanging DVR 15

PostThu May 31, 2018 7:57 pm

I have a ARRI RAW footage shot on ARRI ALEXA SXT EV in 3424*2202 - Open Gate @24fps with LOG C Wide Gamut. We used rec.2020 (ARRI 2020 LUT) on camera.

Framing:
We tried manual sizing in color page.

We set the input sizing height to 0.500 and zoom to 1.49 with tape to set frame line reference which worked for 2.39.

I am now trying to use 'Clip Attributes' in media page.

Pixel Aspect Ratio:
CinemaScope

Input Sizing Preset:
None

Super Scale:
2x

But when I try 4x

Resolve crashes and goes back to login screen after few minutes of rainbow wheel in Mac OSX 10.12.6 (MacOs Sierra) on my 15 inch macbook pro 2015 edition.

Are You testing the final frontier?
Do you really need a 4x upscale pattern for Arri RAW Open Gate?

On MacBook?

I am just testing the upscale.

As a Da Vinci Resolve user I am reporting the hanging issue.

2x and 4x gave me the same results.

I’m afraid you are rather testing the limits of your hardware with this. Super Scale works well for me on a machine with 8 GB VRAM.

I got 16gb ram but the upscale won't work since it's hanging the system due to algorithm calculations.

The upscale feature is used for making HD to 2k/3k/4k up-scaling.

Sounds like you have 16G or system ram, not GPU ram,

I thank all the professionals who answered to my query. I agree a Vram would solve the issue being faced. My reason to post on this forum was to broaden my knowledge of Resolve 15 public beta's new feature. A wonderful rock solid application provided by Black Magic making post production affordable. I am not being sarcastic. Resolve has brought best of editing, color science, visual effects and sound with distribution tools. It's interesting to discuss first hand with fellow users regarding features along with web search and reading the manual to find resolution to a growing network of Resolve users to sort out workflow issues or difficulties on projects.

utsabnov, I don't think anybody doesn't agree with the assumption of sharing and discussing features are cool... You're welcome.
But you know, imho if you really want to help improving the dvpt of Resolve, you should better try something you computer is able to deal with. Specifically because here, regardless to other elements (see below), the first thing which pops up in any reader's mind is "his hardware is too weak", faaaar before any considerations of Resolve's potential fault. That is the problem.
Now, 2 suggestions : first, upgrade your signature info, because you know that a MBP is not ready to handle UHD, especially because the GPU is not beefy (like amost 80% of Apple's default GPUs computers anyway).
Second, 2 problems here :
I got 16gb ram but the upscale won't work since it's hanging the system due to algorithm calculations. The upscale feature is used for making HD to 2k/3k/4k up-scaling.

As written above, you talk CPU RAM while others talk VRAM (video ram, therefore GPU memory) on which Resolve strongly relies. [Do "Apple > about my mac" menu and check the Graphics line...].
In the end, well yes, we can say upscale features are aiming to upscale struff, but you know, upscaling UHD to x4 is not the more basic and frequent operation Resolve users are going to try... morever on a MBP ;)
Better try more classic usage before...

I have updated my signature.

You have explained me clearly what was going wrong. I was upscaling 4x on a system ram on a MBP.

No, you were not: Super Scale is a GPU process. The Intel Iris is using shared RAM as VRAM and is not really recommended for serious work with Resolve. You may be able to do some basic tasks in HD, though.
