16:9 and 2.35:1 in same project

PostSun Sep 23, 2018 12:32 am

Hello,

Is it possible to have footage with two different aspect ratios on the same timeline? I am planning on shooting a film in both 16:9 and 2.35:1. Are there any problems in post production awaiting me when I do this?

i set the working raster to the maximum size needed for deliverables

once gradeing is finished / done / dusted i dup the timeline and do a pan-n-scan pass for each raster inside a mask

it's trivial to switch raster dimensions, but roto/tracks etc are based on the raster they were created in - making a simple change to raster dimensions into a nightmare of flying roto and untracked masks

i remove the mask and render out each timeline to the matching raster

pretty strightforward really

There are a couple of solutions in this thread.

I don't think that thread deals with my specific concern. I'm guessing the answer is a simple YES seeing that it is done in many different motion pictures such as Hunger Games, The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar, Grand Budapest Hotel and many others.

Hello James,
Maybe read in the manual: Image Sizing and Resolution Independence (chapter 9)? :)

Set your Input Sizing properly, create a 2.39 sequence and add the 16:9 clips. You'll see bars on the sides.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I Assume you have the master timeline at 16/9 and occasionally you need the 2.35/1 hard crop to it.

there are few ways to do it, and it depend how hard you need the workflow to be but smoother playbachj or simple but a bir more annoying to play with.

simple solution is to have a white over black matte/image frame repeated that you put on the top layer and it will black the 2.35 AR as will. simple to put, it will probably require some extra cache. (I)

or, generate the same frame, put it in the group node or in the single clip node and as a mixer layer you can have it. it might require cache (recommended) (II)

keyframeing the output blanking. doable but not recommended: if one frame change in the sequence, the whole sync goes out of the window. not my preferred mode. no cache required. (III)

in Homecoming (amazon release in november) we have 1.78, 2.35 and 1:1 AR through the episodes and we used method (II).

It sounded like you wanted to output different aspect ratios. If you mention Grand Budapest Hotel, that implies you only want to input different aspect ratios. Grand Budapest Hotel is scope (present day story), with various parts set in the past being 16:9 or 4:3, adding variable black bars on the left and right. Like Walter said, using input sizing and source cropping/blanking will get you what you want. As long as the actual aspect ratio of the timeline never changes, you won't run into any problems.

I for one
would have a much better life

if I could have multiple timelines with different resolutions in one project

I work on multiscreen productions
and many different screens at different resolutions
which need to be synchronized
and are coming from the same source material

Resolve does little to make that possible
