Avoid this driver... !!!

PostFri Jan 08, 2021 4:59 pm

I updated to nVidia's 461.09 Gaming driver today and WOW, what a mess is Resolve!

Switched to Studio 460.89 and got back to normal.

Studio 461.40 also seems to work fine.

Ouch, thanks for the heads up!

Just because I'm so likely to "give it a go anyway", could you say what was wrong? Maybe you can scare me into holding off... Logs would be good too, to see what kinds of errors Resolve was having.

Frequent crashes, couldn't play a simple Fast Gausian Blur in Fusion, would stop playback for no reason, frequent lockups, error messages with effect processing...

Oh, just don't do it!

The Maxwell generation seems fine with the latest driver so far. Maybe the issues in v461.09 affect GTX/RTX 10x0, 20x0, and 30x0 GPUs only.

"Downgraded" to 460.89 and all is good in the world.

Glad I found this! I posted a bug report earlier today, and it seems like this might be my issue. I noticed a specific action/series of actions that would crash Resolve, but I had also noticed quite a bit of more general instability that I hadn't tried to pin down yet.

Definitely agree this should be stickied so folks try a driver rollback as an initial troubleshooting.

TLDR: Don't use the gaming drivers.
No issues with Studio Drivers - even with Resolve beta.

I never knew there was a Studio Driver for creative uses. Always had gaming.

I switched over to it via the Geforce app, and right off the bat it offered me 460.89

Trying now to see if it corrects my issue

Since 461.09 is a "460 Relase Driver", I'd assume that this is rather a Gaming Driver issue than a 461.09 issue. Anyway nVidia is in the process of transforming the Quadro channel to an RTX channel. As a side effect the Studio drivers may increasingly differ in more than a longer release cycle from the Gaming Drivers. I see no sense to install the Gaming Drivers on a Resolve machine [yes, nVidia Xperience might trick you into that].

What was the last Gaming driver that you had installed?

460.89 works well for me with 17b18. I don't have an RTX machine for testing purposes, though.

Would it still crash with a fresh configuration [rename "{%ProgramData%|%APPDATA%}\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve" to "DaVinci Resolve.del", rename "%USERPROFILE%\Resolve.*.userprofile" to Resolve.*.userprofile.del]?

Also tossing a +1 for 460.89. It has been incredibly stable for me.

Also I have not had any problems gaming on systems with the studio driver so not totally sure what the difference is.

I just went from driver 457.xx ( can't remember) to 460.89.... and my Davinci continues to crash every time I try to make a simple fusion composition. Running a capable computer, so hardware is not the issue.

Any one else still experience issues with 460.89? If so, were you able to address them? And how?

I haven't seen anyone mention 461.09 Studio Driver for Quadro cards but I had it installed on my P4000 and seemed to have issues simply displaying selected media (just got a blank monitor window).

Can anyone confirm that 461.09 Studio Driver for Quadro is also bad news (at least with some cards)? I have seen a post elsewhere where someone had 461.09 installed with their Quadro without issue so it got me wondering.

Thanks

I'm not sure how much more clearly we can say this:

DO NOT USE ANY VERSION OF THE 461.09 NVIDIA DRIVER FOR ANY CARD!

Lots of online advice that you have to use the Studio driver. While this will work in this case for people with 10 series and higher NVIDIA cards (it works because the current Studio driver is 460.89), there are NO Studio drivers for older 900, 800 and 700 series NVIDIA cards. In that case, your only option is Game Ready drivers. Because we don't want to use the 461.09 Game Ready driver, use the next most recent, which is 460.89

I have a GTX 960 2GB GPU and tried installing the Gaming 460.89 driver with v17b7. I got the GPU message to quit or continue to configure the GPU setting. The setting didn't list CUDA as an option, only OpenCL. I stepped back one more GPU driver version, 460.79, and all is working again, being able to select CUDA in the GPU settings.

I have the 460.89 version of studio driver installed but am still getting lots of problems. I can't export anything without it either crashing or freezing after telling me "The GPU failed t perform image processing"...

I feel like everything got worst since I bought the studio version and installed 17 beta. I used to use 16 free version and everything worked fine.

With 17, I am trying to export in 6K and using noise reduction so that might also be a reason for crashes since I know it can be heavy. But at the same time a lot of people seem to be having this problem.

In general, with a i9-7920X CPU @ 2.90GHz with 64GB of RAM and a GTX 1080 should I be having these problem while using noise reduction on 6K R3d files?

Gotta do your research. Apple products are no longer compatible with Nvidia cards. I believe this change happened in 2018 or 19 but yeah don't buy any Nvidia cards if you are running any apple tech later than 2018. Hopefully you didn't do any damage to the computer :/
Nvidia used to be the primary provider for Apples graphics cards but something happened and their partnership fell apart (I think there were some lawsuits) and now they hate each other. Which is stupid because Nvidia is like the industry leader for graphics cards. Just one more BS decision Apple had to make so everything is more difficult

Thanks Dermot. Yea after doing more research I found out more about the amount of vRAM needed for 6K footage and yea 8Gb is not enough. Lowered my timeline resolution to 4K and it’s already better. It’s slow with all the grading and NR but exporting a clip is now easier.

Time to get a better GPU with more VRam
