[Issue] Davinci Resolve (really) slow to load (17b2)

PostFri Nov 20, 2020 12:15 am

This is my first forum post so hopefully I'm doing this right haha

It hasn't always been like this, so I'm not sure what changed, but since the later versions of DR 16, the load times have been REALLY slow! In 16-17b1 the startup logo screen would take over a minute just to get to the database screen. Luckily in 17b2 it's down to 15-20 sec which is perfectly fine by me. (I'm on a Windows 10 PC running the Studio versions of DR btw).

Now for the real issue where things get really slow (which unfortunately was not fixed for me in 17b2 like I hoped it would be). When opening a project (and I've tried with multiple projects) the time that it takes for the media to load and thumbnails to show has been averaging about 4-5 minutes, every time. Then add another minute onto that for the timeline to actually be playable. Here are some time measurements I did earlier today:

Project 1:
-Contains 66 .mp4 clips from DJI Mini 2 (so nothing too bitrate heavy)
-Audio loaded immediately
-Took 5 min to load video clip thumbnails in media bin and timeline, +1 min more for timeline to be playable
After fresh restart of PC:
- 4:25 for clip thumbnails, +1 min to be playable

Switching to another project from the project menu loaded almost immediately (sometimes maybe 30 sec or so)

Closed Resolve and reopened to try project with .braw files to see if it made any difference:
-Contains 143 braw clips
-Loaded in 4 min, playable 10-15sec later.

So in the end, I still haven't figured out why it's so slow to load. The fact that I can switch to another project and the media take almost no time to load leads me to think that upon fresh opening of Resolve, it could be loading the media for ALL the projects in my database, which would make absolutely no sense, so I don't think it's that.

So if anyone has a solution to this or is experiencing the same thing, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Really hoping to find a solution because I really like using Resolve and I don't want to have to drop it based on this.

Thanks

My PC Specs:
-Ryzen 7 3700x 8-core processor
-32gb RAM
-MSI Radeon RX 3700XT 8gb GPU (Updated to latest drivers)
-512gb m.2 SSD (DR installed on this)
-2TB & 3TB Internal SATA HDDs (Media files are on these)

I am also having this issue in 17b3. Media load times are several minutes in some cases. It also happens when switching back and forth between edit and color tabs.

17 b4. Still long media loading times.

I have attached the log file after a Resolve restart, and waiting for 1 minute for media to appear.

If someone is interested in checking it out... Thanks!

I'm about to update to b4 right now, let's see if it still affects my system as well. Will report back.

Same problem here in Windows 10. I'm on b4 and no differencefrom the other versions. All clips recorded with Sony A7iii.

Exported the project to my mac and there it loaded instantly.

I updated to b4 and it's still a problem... No change. I should add that it is happening with all codecs, not just one type of clip...

Ok, glad to know I'm not the only one having this issue. I also just updated to 17b4 to see if it would help. I always hope that the 50+ performance and stability improvements they mention in the release notes is going to fix this issue, but it still happens in 17b4.

I'm on the latest build, and the problem still exists. Seems to be getting worse with each release. Takes even longer to load, and also happens when switching between rooms the first and second time.

I thought I was the only one with this issue. I just bought a new laptop to do some on the go work and have actually set up a return because I assumed it was a problem with compatibility with AMD Smart shift trying to use the wrong gpu. What is really strange to me is that I absolutely don't notice this on my desktop rig at all. Projects load in seconds. The laptop is a Dell G5 SE, Ryzen 7 4800H and a Radeon RX 5600M, Desktop is working with a Ryzen 9 3900X and an Nvidia Rtx2070.

Hopefully, they get this sorted...and my desktop load times don't start to show this...

So this could be related to the GPU... I took notice on your laptop having amd GPU and the desktop having nvidia.

Anyone tested switching GPU?

I have been trying to buy an nVidia GPU for the past few weeks, but they're sold out everywhere. I've seen similar posts from the past that there issues with AMD GPUs. I'm fairly confident an NVidia card will work, but just need to get my hands on one.

This problem only shows up on Radeon GPUs and i don't understand it ... is it a driver issue or a Resolve issue.

I have 2 cards GTX 1080ti and RX 6800XT ... the Radeon card has issue in Resolve .. even in Resolve 16 .. where it's better but not perfect.

On the other hand the 6800XT is a monster when it comes to compute vs the 1080Ti .. i'm being able to run Noise reduction with 3 frames real time at 4K 25 FPS from Sony A7III footage.

Short story .. Resolve 17 unusable , Resolve 16 usable but with some issues .. and this seems to be a Windows version only because i didn't hear Mac users complain about it.

LE: I see that nobody from BMD have replied to any AMD GPU related issue ... i can say i'm a bit disappointed.

Hi All,
I am still struggling with this same issue on my Desktop PC. When I start up Resolve 17 (All beta's and today the released 17 Version as well) the program starts and I can navigate all menus but it takes 3 to 5 minutes to show the media. In the meantime, I can not push play (play head does not go forward...).
I have my footage on a removable hard drive (Crucial X8 1TB) via USB C.

Funny is that I run a Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 laptop with much lesser specs with same above removable hard drive and I do not see the same behaviour. It all works as normal there...

I updated to the official release, and it seems to be working great now! I did uninstall the beta version before installing the official release. I have the DR17 installed on my second SSD (D:) which is where I do all my video work.

The first time I loaded a project it took about 45 seconds before I could do anything on the timeline which was quite lower than the normal 3-5 minutes I would usually get. After I closed everything down and started it up again, all my video thumbnails and the ability to playback was immediate!

I do see there is an updated AMD Video driver released on 2/11/21. I'm using 22.2.1 and I'm hesitant to install 22.2.2 since everything is working at the moment, but I'll give it a shot anyway and update if it breaks anything.

(Update) Installed the latest AMD Driver 22.2.2 and everything is still starting up great!

Can confirm it's fixed!

Just update to latest stuff and it should work. I tried 21.2.2 and it was faster, but still took 30+ sec for thumbnails to load, but with 21.2.3 it is instantaneous.

(An additional thing to try is in Preferences... Memory/GPU... and make sure your GPU is manually selected as well as the Processing Mode; so both unchecked and specified manually)

Dang, the issue is back in DRS 17.1.1, although not as bad as previously. The load time is about 30-45 sec instead of 3-5 minutes.

I updated to newest DRS and AMD Drivers (21.3.2) and the issue is back, so I'll be reverting again to 17.0 and 21.2.3. I hope this can get fixed wonderfully like it did before. It was soooooo great to be able to just start working away without waiting for things to load in my project.

It takes less than 30 seconds here, and I have quite few third-party plug-ins loading.

Eric, Arthur,

Please let us know if you see this issue again, along with a link to the diagnostic logs (from the Help menu).

Arthur,
Can I check if this is still the system you use (with 64 GB RAM Im guessing)?

Hi Shrinivas,
I can confirm that is my setup. Indeed, it is 64GB RAM (minor typo ;) )

I lastly opend resolve this weekend in the latest update and the issue was there and I have not seen an update of Resolve. Would there be reason to assume something in my installation has changed and the issue should have removed itself??

regards,
Arthur
